I understand about cookies and I also know about the likes of Alexa having a microphone picking up on conversations etc.
However today I picked up a young person up from her home.( for work) As she got in my car her mum ( who was outside ) chatted through the window and said that she had bought her daughter a Hell's Kitten dress yesterday.

I hadn't heard of them but tonight my lap top is full of adverts for Hell's Kitten stuff!

Blimey!!!

It's been listening to you Smile

Your phone heard the conversation and has been kind enough to send you adverts for it.
Confused

notacooldad · 30/07/2019 23:04

I realised it's my phone and linked to my Google account. It was weird as my phone was in my work bag on the back seat!
Those microphones are sensitive!!

Turn off the microphone on your mobile.

I can't remember how to do it but there is a way so the overrule still works but it doesn't get to listen to you all the time!

Also look at your app's rights - so many of them have far too much access Hmm

Overrule? Phone...

It's more likely that your online profile indicates that you're their target demographic

The business model of most apps is based on gathering data rather than doing whatever it is that the app doesShock

Are you sure you’re not just noticing the ads now you’re aware of that particular product? The mind can play tricks on us at times ...

No, your phone definitely listens. My and DP tested it the other week by having a loud conversation about two really random, unrelated items last week. Guess what I've been getting FB ads for this week...

Big data is terrifying. I am on the Gap mailing list because I've bought stuff online from there and Banana Republic. I happend to be in a country where I could by BR in real life recently and picked up a couple of bits. I didn't sign up for anything but used the same credit card I'd used online and suddenly I was getting 4 emails a day from BR. I've never had any in the past (only from Gap) and it was the next day they started so the only trigger was using a card in real life that I'd used online previously. I need a tinfoil hat.

I'm seriously nowhere like their target demographic. 😂😂

I'm just surprised at how sensitive the microphone was. As I said it was inside a work bag on back set of the car and the mum was talking from the pavement near a busy road!

I know when I open a link on MN I'm going to be inundated with those ads for the next two weeks!!
