I'd like to take the kids out on a bar hunt tonight but am not 100% sure exactly what time, eg early twilight/late twilight etc? Any ideas?

After the sun has set below the horizon, but well before it is completely night. If you need a torch it's getting too dark.

How long will it take you to get to where you expect to see bats?

If you need a torch in the open it's getting too dark.

Of FGS! I cannot brain today!

If you need a torch in open countryside it's getting too dark.

We have bats nearby and can see them from the living room. It’s normally when it’s getting dark but still a bit of light. Live on the west coast of Scotland so this time of year it takes a while to get properly dark.

Depends on their age and if they are legal or not 🤭 As for bats, we live in woodland and beside a river and its usually around 9pm they start coming out

‘Our’ bats are arriving around 10-10.30pm at the moment, so not quite dark, (we’re in the East Midlands). We have a bat detector we got on the internet for £25, it came as a kit you put together and put a battery in. Fairly simple to put together, but needs a little bit of soldering. Works really well, you can hear the bats and have a good guess as to the type of bat you are hearing.
National trust and local parks sometimes do ‘Bat walks’ locally, worth looking out for if you or your DC’s are interested.

Now is good! I've just seen one Grin

(A bat, that is, not a WineWink)

We have bats that fly around our back garden (South coast) always see them just after sun has set .
