Just melted my poaching pan! What silly things have you done?

Ok so I’m making lunch, poached eggs on toast. I’m hopeless at making them in a pan so have a poacher insert with plastic cups.

Everything is going well, toast is on, tea is brewing. Eggs all ready to go bar putting water into the pan. Next door’s cat suddenly comes into the house so I shut the door and shoo her out (I have 3 cats and they aren’t keen on her). Put the pan on. Then I start to smell burnt plastic. Yep I’d forgotten to put the water in! Blush

Pan is ruined and I’ve just had to have cheese on toast instead. New pans are about £17 for a cheap one so not a inexpensive mistake Shock.

Cheer me up MN and tell me about your domestic disasters.

I did a similar thing but mine was leaving the hob on, it boiled dry and of course the plastic insert melted.

You don't need to buy a new pan though. You can get silicone moulds that float in water in any pan and cost much less than £17.

I also recently saw someone make poached eggs in a shallow amount of water in a frying pan so I'm going to try that next.

Zofloramummy · 27/07/2019 15:13

I’ve tried doing it that way and it always ends up looking like a deformed jellyfish! Grin

Good point about the silicone mould’s I will try those.

I put a plastic colinder on a hob ring that was turned on.
Wasn't bothered about the £1 colinder but the smell every time I used that ring used to make me heave.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 27/07/2019 15:41

I forgot I had put eggs on to boil until they exploded!! Once forgot to put water in the saucepan with the cabbage, it caught fire. Set fire to tea towels far too many times. I really shouldn't be allowed to use the hob Blush

Poured fried curly kale onto a sieve to get rid of the oil.
The sieve mesh was plastic. It made a schlurp sound as it melted.

SlocombePooter · 27/07/2019 16:35

Melted the lid of my Cuisinart food processor! I once melted a child's plastic lunchbox. Singed tea towels, yes! Exploding eggs, yes! All just part of my extensive repertoire ;-)

CherithPonsonby · 27/07/2019 16:36

When I was a kid I washed my mum’s (very dusty) old typewriter.

Luckily though it was not the electric one.

I once tipped water on some rather overly-lively candles that were pooling molten wax. Nearly singed my eyebrows off. That was spectacular.

Sunburntnoseandears · 27/07/2019 16:40

My adult dd once heated a chocolate muffin in the microwave for 5 mins.
Looked like a lump of burned charcoal!

fromthefloorboardsup · 27/07/2019 16:45

I've done this at least twice. Luckily
I don't eat eggs anymore!

maddiemookins16mum · 27/07/2019 17:11

I did that with a poached egg pan we’d used for 25 years, gutted.

Notageek · 27/07/2019 17:13

Microwave egg poacher ...1 min to heat the water, I min to cook the eggs , pop the plastic thing in the dishwasher ...so easy !

Mrsjayy · 27/07/2019 17:13

Last week i put wrong ring on walked away was alerted to smoke I had set my oven glove alight BlushShock

SlocombePooter · 27/07/2019 17:49

Well oven gloves are just an accident waiting to happen!

SlocombePooter · 27/07/2019 17:50

I boil eggs in a steamer now. So easy!

Mrsjayy · 27/07/2019 17:56

oven gloves are just an accident waiting to happen!

Clearly Grin and they stink when the singe away to ash

Zofloramummy · 27/07/2019 19:24

Grin these are great! I’ve also set fire to a plastic colander and several tea towels. When I replaced my cooker a few years ago I bought an induction job to reduce the risks, obviously hasn’t helped today!

I burnt our new sofa. I put a hot plate of food on it while I leant over to get the remote and the plate stuck to the leather... I was so embarrassed to tell DH.

yetanothernewusername1 · 27/07/2019 19:40

Popped my hamster in his (plastic) cage on top of my electric cooker out of the way of the toddlers in my teeny kitchen....went off on my 3rd day of my new job....dad and kids went off to nursery drop off. Unknown to us my youngest had turned the knob on the cooker....I lost my flat that day though we were all ok and major possessions retrieved but unfortunately the hamster wasn't so lucky 😢. I also didn't have contents insurance!
I am now religious about turning the cooker off at the wall and never covering the top with anything!!! Oh and I now have insurance 😁

Tryingtogetitright · 27/07/2019 19:46

OMG yetanother you poor thing that's awful (and poor Hamster)!

I hide dirty washing up in the oven when my cleaner comes so my surfaces are clear for her. Switched on the oven to heat up for dinner, completely forgot. Melted holes in all the plastic bottles. Smelt awful!

proudestofmums · 27/07/2019 20:24

Left a plastic slice in oven after serving food. Oven had been on a hot setting, which was enough, even though I turned it off, to melt the *** thing. It was my favourite too. PS i put it in the oven so cats wouldn’t get at it and burn their tongues

Kalim8 · 27/07/2019 21:16

Oh, another time I squirted some washing up liquid into a frying pan but for some reason didn't actually wash it but left it on the side.
The next day, having completely forgotten, I started frying some sausages in it. Thought it smelt a bit odd. Wasted sausages.

We had some friends popping round late in the afternoon for a cuppa. I was super organised and smug & had made lasagne before they arrived. I wanted it out of the way so put the plastic lid onto the pyrex dish & popped it in the cold oven while I tidied up. Friends arrived, we had a lovely time. Shortly before they were due to go I thought I'd get the oven warming up... 5 minutes later there was a revolting smell of melted plastic. We went to KFC instead.
