Anyone got over major fears and how?!

A mouse came into my kitchen tonight. I grabbed the cat, let her chase it into the utility and was super calm. Only 2 years ago I moved out of my house for a week over my fear of mice!

I've also re trained myself to not be scared of driving on motorways. I'm really proud of beating both these fears. Was just thinking tonight how glad I am to have changed my thinking about these two things as they were both huge for me.

Anyone got over anything similar and how?

I am terrified of mice. Did you have a cat two years ago?

sureitsgrand · 25/07/2019 22:50

No. I tried every type of preventative for mice to no avail and got a rescue cat, hoping it might deter them. She is, coincidentally, the greatest mouse catcher. Since she arrived we've never had a mouse, until today. We'd been away for 4 days, so guess it took its opportunity but she will get rid of any again I'm pretty sure! She has cured my fear of mice 100%

I've not but watching this! I'm absolutely terrified of wasps. I've recently come to love bees which was a big step! It's just wasps now that make me run away, my little one is at an age where he will start picking up on it so I need to get a grip.

Public speaking: fear of it held me back in my career but eventually got promoted to a role where it was unavoidable. Propanalol (beta blocker) is my saviour.

Ok, as someone mentioned meds, coincidentally I've been on prozac since I beat both those fears.....

Anti anxiety medication taken for general anxiety and depression has really helped my rodent phobia which was horrible..

sureitsgrand · 25/07/2019 23:09

It's an awful fear, I live in the country so mice are unavoidable. But I literally used to be frozen with fear over them. So happy that today I just ran a couple of feet away from it, gathered myself and then sorted it (well grabbed cat to sort it)

How did you over cone the fear?

Or was it the medication which has helped?

sureitsgrand · 25/07/2019 23:35

Well I thought it was the cat that helped. But maybe being on anti depressants has calmed me enough, I only really linked the two since seeing a couple of responses here though

I think for me, anti depressants and being in a better state of mind generally ( similarly I am a new driver , only passed as an adult a couple of years ago, with motorways it was just feel the fear and do it anyway..)
I think mindfulness meditation, anti depressants/ anti anxiety drugs and becoming teetotal are the things which have improved my mental state and therefore reduced my anxiety and phobias. It's a cliche but treating myself better has really helped me to mentally stronger..
