Hi all,

Going through a horrible break up and I've adopted a cat to cheer the house up. He is a gorgeous 11 week old Persian.
He is going to be an indoor cat.

Any advice / tips from cat moms? I have a large kitchen, utility room and bathroom he can access when home alone. Two large windows with sitting areas underneath and plenty of safe places to get away from it all if needed.

Keeping an indoor cat is generally what people do now isnt it?

Er, no?

House cats are the norm in my social circle.

You must be hanging around with some get strange people.

I know several people with house cats who live in flats or who own expensive breeds.

My sister had a Persian & it had such a flat face that it couldn't defend itself from any other cats / dogs / foxes

Plants are also very good at cheering up a house. Don't get cabin fever from being stuck this side of the glass either...

My cat is an indoor cat - she seems happy to me. She has lots of toys and attention, free run of the house, lots of company.
I worry about her getting run over or fighting with the other cats.

I've got two Persian rescues. They are indoor cats, but go into the garden under supervision. As others have said. Get him used to grooming and having his eyes cleaned early on. Find a good cat groomer for a good going over, every few months.

The most important thing is to get very good insurance. My first pair of sisters ran up bills of £16k!

Persians are not like most cats. Mine don't jump much and don't play a lot either. But they are just the most amazing, placid and affectionate bean bags that breathe!

Ps. Come along to the Litter tray. You'll get loads of advice and it's a great family!

@mrssunshinexxx my girls are quite happy to be inside. They aren't over bothered about going in the garden.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/07/2019 11:28

Pps. My Persians just aren't bright enough to be out unsupervised.

TheClaws · 26/07/2019 12:38

My purebred is just fine inside. The wildlife outside is happy too.

Whitecandle · 26/07/2019 19:27

@KittyLane1 the things I'd say with letting them go out on a lead etc is that they may get a taste for the outdoors then and want to get through any open window/door x

Consider adopting a cat rather than shopping. There is currently a cat crisis in the UK with 22,000 needing rescue a year.

You could still get kittens but by paying for your cat from a breeder you are supporting people who are continuing to produce more and more cats.

Here he is, Mr KittyKatLane, he has settled in perfectly, he is brilliant with his litter tray and slept all night under my chin

Thank you- lovely cat and hope one who continues to bring much love to you.

Whitecandle · 30/07/2019 15:10

Awwww. How's he getting on? Can we have another pic? 😀

These are my little buggers. The cream coloured one sadly passed away 2 months ago xx

DareDevil223 · 30/07/2019 15:23

It's not cruel to have indoor cats, personally I think that an early death by car, poison, weird cat haters or kids with air rifles is a damn sight crueller. My indoor cat is happy and healthy. He chose not to go out.

I know lots of people with indoor cats and they are fine.

Proseccoagain · 30/07/2019 20:29

I have two Birman sisters and they are not streetwise at all; they are indoor cats but I have trained them to wear a little jacket and lead and they love being outdoors under supervision. They do go off lead in the garden and are not very adventurous; I take them outdoors every day if fine, and they love just exploring the garden and hiding in wait of any passing wildlife. The reason they are indoor cats is that they would just get lost or stolen, as they are attractive and expensive. But they are real lapcats and so loving. I knew what I was getting into when I got them. They have loads of toys, which I rotate so they don't get bored, a cat tree. and have the run of the house.
