If Scotland vote for independence, can't parliament just block it?

Like they're doing with Brexit?

I gather the vast majority of MPs are pro-Union so wouldn't want to see Scotland secede from the United Kingdom?!

So, in the event Scotland had Indy Ref 2 and it's a "Yes", that's just the answer to a binary question, but parliament has the ultimate say on the matter?

And if not, why not?

Yes they can, but if a substantial majority of Scotland wants to secede it is unlikely Parliament will prevent it.

In Spain, a majority of Catalans want independence, but the government are working to prevent it. It's not a fun situation.

Agree, not a fun situation.

I also think if Scotland does secede, they'll be denied full EU membership, Spain will veto the fuck out of their membership bid as they know the Catalans will then go hell for leather for the same treatment.

What a time to be alive!

Parliament is currently blocking Brexit so well, we're likely to crash out October 31. Hmm

All unionist parties at WM have said they would refuse a Section 30 (permission to hold a legally-binding referendum) so if Scotland were to go ahead with a non-binding ref (like Brexit) WM could refuse to recognise a Yes vote, and the matter would end up in international courts.

Spain have said specifically they would not block Scottish EU membership. The situation with Catalonia is quite different.

That’s where UDI comes in- unilateral Declaration of Independence.

I believe that the vote has to be sanctioned by Westminster never mind the result. Plus, Spain has got their own agenda regarding Catalonia, Gibraltar and the land that they hold in Morocco. I wouldn't put too much faith in their support.
