I will be mortified, we’re going away as a group and although I’ve always been big, I think I’m a bit heavier right now than other times I’ve flown. I’m scared. Tell me it will be ok please 🙏

@AntisocialMedia that's a really helpful comment.

Well done on weight loss op. It's a good feeling isn't it? Keep going and enjoy your hol. Have a good time Grin

Honestly you will be fine. I flew with TUI recently and I’m a size 26, with all the weight on my stomach, and pregnant. I was absolutely fine and didn’t need an extender.

It really depends on the seat as they mend the seatbelts by cutting out damaged bits, so some belts are always shorter than others. I’ve had journeys where on the outbound I had to ask for one, and on the way home I had about 4 inches spare!

In previous trips on various airlines I have had to ask for an extender, and the cabin crew were always very discreet about it.

Please don’t let it worry you.. which I am sure it does as it did me the first couple of times!

I’m flying Tui on Friday. My aim, since last flying and needing an extender, is to not need one. Diet went slightly awry being in France last week.

BrokenWing · 21/07/2019 10:55

I got to my seat and was mortified when I couldn't buckle up, I was only a size 20. I asked the attendant for help and although he was lovely and discrete I was further mortified when he said I would need to change seats as they weren't allowed to use an extender at the emergency exit row.

I had to wait for the flight to completely board so he could find an empty seat. Thankfully there was a spare empty row to hide in, I sat down and the belt in the new seat buckled with still loads of belt spare. Not sure if they purposely have shorter belts on exit seats so fatties like me don't block the door or if as he said sometimes belts get shortened/cut when repaired but I avoided exit doors after that and never had a problem again.

You'll be fine @GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat - I think I am slightly larger than you as I am at the high end of size 22 (not quite in size 24 territory but not far off). On easyjet older planes I can just get the belt on at its maximum extension without needing a separate extender. The newer easyjet planes have slightly longer belts and I have a couple of inches spare there! Don't know about TUI but shouldn't be too different.

Likethebattle · 21/07/2019 11:37

I’m an 18 and the belt dies up with a good few inches to spare. They are discreet if you need an extender and just pass it over As it’s not anything unusual to them.

I flew to NYC in November at 16st 4 and a size 20 (have lost weight since then) and I was really, really uncomfortable. The belt did up with room to spare but I was wedged into the seat and my thighs went under the armrest, pressing against DH and the person next to me. I just felt too wide for the space and I spent the entire flight trying to keep my arms tucked in so they didn't spill over too Sad

That was actually the catalyst for me losing weight. I fly again in October and I'm determined never to feel like that again.

amusedbush · 21/07/2019 13:37

Sorry, I was 17st 4! Blush

Flower777 · 21/07/2019 13:45

I wish they did plus sized seats. So not purchasing two but a slight premium for a slightly bigger seat.

Probably wouldn’t work in practice.

And yes I am trying to Lose weight.

OP I flew recently. I’m a good size 22 and also quite tall. It was at full capacity but I was fine.

Good luck. I know how stressful it is.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 11/05/2022 17:50

Have a look at Jess on the plus size on Instagram. She did a story not long ago about asking for extenders and what a non issue it is

I’m 16.11, I carry my weight on my bottom half so trousers are a size 20/22. I’m doing slimming world have have lost weight, almost 2 stone, but have less than a month to go now.

Similar than me.
i flew last week and it was fine. No need for an extender etc…

Only4You · 11/05/2022 18:33

Oh I missed the thread was a few years old!

Luchhhia · 12/05/2022 10:29

Ahhh plane seat belt anxiety!! Worried I won’t fit! Someone reassure me… 🥴🥴

heavyistheheed · 12/05/2022 10:38

Literally this

You: excuse me, may I have an extender please?

Steward: of course, here you go

They expect a certain proportion of the plane to need one and have many available, please don't let it worry you, embarrass you or cause you anxiety. Enjoy your vacay Smile

Catrice · 12/05/2022 10:42

I know this is an old thread but it's so sad the number of replies from people stating they were embarrassed asking for a seatbelt extender. Truly please don't be. Your size is just a number...people come in all shapes and sizes ...please don't be embarrassed x

Onthegrid · 12/05/2022 10:49

To echo the previous poster, it is no big deal asking for an extender, first time I had to do it I was a little concerned, especially as it was the 2nd leg of a long haul flight. Since then I have learnt that seat belts come in all different sized lengths and that even in business class with wider seats sometimes they are too short. I never select an exit row seat and I would say I need an extender one in four flights. It isn't even always by plane type/carrier as on occasions when I have struggled swapping with DH sitting in the next seat has worked.

Having said all of this I am still on a quest to lose weight so I never have to ask, but that is for me and not for the embarrassment.
