Heard a bit of a row on Jeremy vine today, a back lady was objecting to being called person of call by jasmine
The caller said don’t call me a person of colour
I am not a person of colour I black

So I’m wondering if this is offensive
As it always reminded me of daybjn tbebild day’s when people said thjngs like coloured people
I don’t know just something never seemed quite right about the expression to me

I heard that to op and thought it had been ruled out. Interesting how the different countries have different triggers.

I'd feel more comfortable saying African American, but I'm white. What would you call the white Americans because they are not native either?

European Americans?

Just in this thread we have people saying they refer to themselves as Asian, and people saying it’s rude to refer to people as Asian.Confused
It seems to me it can be a very personal decision.

It's a form of collective bureaucratic shorthand like BAME

I agree that I think its more an american term

We would use BAME i guess

I would use any term that they wanted me to (provided I knew what they wanted!)

However I would NOT call a 6ft man with a beard "Madam"!

I'd feel more comfortable saying African American

But it's not a synonym for African American.
