Chicken Pie recipe that tastes like shop-bought chicken pie?

My kids like my chicken pie (made with leeks, carrots, flour to make the sauce) but recently we had an M and S chicken pie and since then they are clamouring for chicken pie every meal time. They say they want mine (it's a matter of loyalty) , but I suspect they want it to taste like the M, and S one.

The M and S is really expensive.

How do I make one that tastes the same or similar? It doesn't appear to have any discernable vegetables and I'm mystified as to how they make the gravy.

Any ideas?

The gravy appears ot be something like instant gravy. We use Bisto Best and that seems pretty similar.

We have the M&S chicken pie every so often and I would use leftover roast chicken and gravy in the pie, plus veg if you want to or put it on the side, and then shortcrust pastry.

It's sometimes in a meal deal which makes it a bit better value, but I think it's normally about £3.50, which doesn't seem that bad really, I'm not sure you could make it for much less as there is quite a lot of chicken in it, plus I think the pastry is all butter, so that would also cost quite a bit.

Try the Jamie Oliver chicken and leek pie recipe. The sauce is made by reducing chicken stock down, then addding white wine and reducing that and then finally adding cream. The leeks (& I add finely chopped mushroom she sometimes) virtually disappear into the sauce and you don't use flour to thicken. It's very rich and delicious!

Hairy bikers best of British chicken ham and leek pie
I doubt it’s anything like the M&S one but it’s the pie to end all pies for me www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/creamy_chicken_ham_and_03877/amp

My mum makes it with tinned chicken in white sauce and it's pretty amazing.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll have a look at them.

BarbaraofSeville - I'd buy the Marks Pie, but to do a dinner for four I don't think one would be enough, and I can't stretch to £8 for a school night dinner.

Oh, we get 3 adult portions out of it (evening meal for me and DP and then lunch for me the next day.

If your DC are primary school age, I would have thought it was plenty with mash and veg.

I mean two adults and two secondary school age children BarbaraofSeville. The time we had it, it was a snap decision after a sports club we all go to. I'm sure it can't be that expensive to recreate.

I make the sauce base with a can of Campbell’s condensed chicken soup.

margaritasbythesea · 17/07/2019 07:25

Thanks. I'll Google and see how you do it.

Another vote to use condensed chicken soup for the sauce
