Okay, my son is really getting into football which is surprising because nobody in my family is into it. He is asking about the England team. Wondering who makes up the England team.. he is asking if the top little teams players from like arsenal, spurs etc are chosen to make up the England team for the world cup? And also do Arsenal and teams like that play in the Europe league or would it just be England that takes part in that?

Sorry if this sounds so stupid but I have never watched football in my life! I'll appreciate any help, thanks Confused

Sorry i am no help with regard to the soccer team, but I'm just going to sit here and read the replies.

howwudufeel · 16/07/2019 10:31

The best players are picked to play for England which invariably means their domestic teams will be Premiership teams. The best English teams go on to play in European competitions (there are two) which is for European domestic clubs but every four years the Euros take place which are when European national teams compete for a trophy.

chzarind · 16/07/2019 10:32

You need to google, save one of us doing it for you.

Great opportunity to sit with your son and use the internet as a learning tool.

howwudufeel · 16/07/2019 10:33

I don’t mind trying to explain it at all. No need for google.

Nesssie · 16/07/2019 10:36

The England team are made up of the best English players (Scotland/Wales have separate teams)

Most of them do play for the bigger Premier League Clubs
Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford (Man U)
Eric Dier, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, (Tottenham)
Kyle Walker, John Stones, Sterling (Man City)
Jordan Pickford, goalkeeper - Everton

But I wouldn't say they are the top players at those team clubs. Unfortunately the Premier League is full of foreign players who are outplaying English players.

All the teams that play in England (in the Premier League, Championship, League 1, League 2 etc) have many different competitions where they all play against each other in a knockout challenge and can win the FA Cup, FA Trophy etc.

The top English teams can also compete in various European cups, where they play against the top teams from European countries like Spain (Barcelona, Real Madrid), Germany (Borissia Dortmund), France (PSG) etc and can win the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

The English national team can play in the World Cup and the Euros.

User10fuckingmillion · 16/07/2019 10:37

Re the England team-yes, it’s made up from the players from smaller teams, provided they are English.

Nesssie · 16/07/2019 10:39

@howwudufeel me neither, I love to talk about football!

crazylady7 · 16/07/2019 10:50

don't worry I have, it gets more confusing the more I read haha @chzarind

Basically the top little teams players from like arsenal, spurs etc are chosen to make up the England team for the world cup? Yes as long as they are English.

And that happens in all the different countries in the world.

And each country has its own league of 'little teams' like we do the Premier League.

BeyondDangerousTshirts · 16/07/2019 10:56

I'm an awesome woman, but a Welsh one so I have little interest in the England team Grin

It may be interesting for your son to know that while the National team is made up of the best players from the top teams (not just in the country they are from but from top teams in other countries too - eg Gareth Bale plays for Real Madrid but also the Wales international team) the Olympics football teams are a lot more complicated. Way more complicated than I can explain here!

crazylady7 · 16/07/2019 10:57

oh boy thank you !! I shall study that thank you lol. @Nesssie

Surely if your DS wants to know about the England squad, he needs to look on the England football team website rather than asking people on here to regurgitate all the information?

I've never looked at the website, but it's a basic given that there will be a website, and all the social medias, that can be found with a few clicks on google that will give names, pics and biographies of the current squad plus where they play, and from that he'll learn that some play in England and some play in other (mostly European) countries and also that the English based teams like Arsenal, Tottenham etc will be made up of players from several nationalities.

Nesssie · 16/07/2019 11:18

Or someone like me could explain it in a simple way for the OP? Rather than her have to decipher what UEFA, FA, PL, MUFC, MCFC, CFC, LFC etc etc stand for? There's a lot of different leagues, teams, competitions, players- it can be confusing!

howwudufeel · 16/07/2019 11:19

Why shouldn’t somebody ask on here? People are happy to answer her.

Nesssie · 16/07/2019 11:20

OP if he wants to know specifics about the players then let me know Smile

I'm a Gunner (Arsenal fan) and we don't have any players in the English national team - Arsenal is predominately made up of foreign players.

crazylady7 · 16/07/2019 11:42

Hey let me clarify something, I am not forcing anybody to answer my question, so click off if you are stumbled by my football post lol!! Thank you to all those responding nicely haha.

Agreed! What on earth is the issue with the OP asking on here?
Surely that is what Mumsnet and the chat topic is for,for heavens sake!

This is a good site for info www.pavilionpromotional.co.uk/ideas-advice/the-beginners-guide-to-football

And great news for your DS, as a Gunner he will learn heartbreak and disappointment from a young age! Sad

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 16/07/2019 11:50

Only blokes or awesome women know about football?

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 16/07/2019 11:53

Oh he’s asking about the England mens team? Should have made that obvious. Most awesome women think of the England team by default rather than the mens team.

Wink

Nesssie · 16/07/2019 11:57

I'm an (awesome) woman and whenever I think of football, I think of mens teams.
I know pretty much everything about mens football and zero about womens football.

stucknoue · 16/07/2019 12:00

The England team are simply the best English players - they can play for any club or overseas as long as they hold a British passport and are not Scottish, Welsh or N Irish (they have their own teams). Usually they play for the famous teams but not always.
