Idiot damaged my car in supermarket car park

I wonder where I stand legally on this one, does anyone have experience of this please?

Sitting in my car (my lovely, brand new, perfect car) in supermarket car park waiting for DH when a guy reverses in to the space next to me (plenty of room). He gets out of his car easily enough but then starts messing about with something (a bag I think) and slammed his car door against mine. This wasn't a little bump or a touch, it was a proper bang,

As I'm getting out, I ask the guy, have you damaged my car? He said no he hadn't but when I got out, it was clear he had - a little dent, paintwork scratched, etc.

We swapped details - he said his insurance would cover it, but now I wonder if it will, it was in a private car park, neither car was moving.

Has anyone any experience of this?

I'm gutted that my new car has been damaged, especially because of someone's carelessness, however, after a polish it's still dented a little and paint damaged but it's not as bad as it initially appeared.

I'm really not sure what to do

Your insurance will most likely go up next year if you claim as you are seen as a higher risk. The exact thing happened to me.

Supermarket car park especially during trading hours is a public place. Just report it to your insurers and let them deal with it.

I did this in a car park. Wind took my door as I opened it. £300 later we were all friends.

Just claim on insurance did you take pictures?
There is not a lot of space in those car parks not that I'm defending so if any damage and you have his details nothing to worry about .

Yes I have been bumped in a supermarket car park. Insurance sorted it all.

RapunzelsRealMom · 14/07/2019 18:05

Yes I did take pics and his reg no, contact details etc. as did he.

I'll get a quote, call him and see how it goes. If his excess it around £250, it'll probably be cheaper to just pay for it.

Someone reversed into my car in a supermarket car park. It was seen as a 50 50 fault as I was sat in the car 🙄
