Sitting room window open as usual, OH jumped up there was a mozzie buzzing around his head. Below the window is a water butt, so I am wondering if that is where it came from. We have not come back from a holiday abroad, so where did it come from??

Eh, we always have mossies don't we? Unless I'm mistaking other insects.

falafelaboutit · 11/07/2019 22:40

Haha what? Don't be ridiculous there are mosquios all over the world Hmm ... Even here in Wales!

DickZillaofTheVilla · 11/07/2019 22:40

We caught a mosquito in Southern Ireland a few weeks ago. It was trapped under a glass and well studied it definitely wasn’t any other kind of long legged fly or anything and you couldn’t mistake the distinctive buzz

falafelaboutit · 11/07/2019 22:41

A quick Google informs me the UK is home to 30
different varieties.

Fill up more water receptacles and see how many you can collect. Like real life Pokemon.

DramaAlpaca · 11/07/2019 22:41

Yes, I can confirm we have mozzies in Ireland. Vicious little feckers they are, too.

smashamasha · 11/07/2019 22:43

OP - serious? You have never seen a mosquito in the U.K. before??

justasking111 · 11/07/2019 22:48

No never, not even when it was sooo hot last summer. OH is going to sort out water butt tomorrow. We do get midges which are bad enough, mind you is lovely seeing the bats swoop down at night.

Have you got any malaria tablets you can take? Hmm

Babdoc · 11/07/2019 22:56

We get them here in Scotland too, OP, although thankfully not in such massive numbers as the damn midges. They’re not just tropical insects.

justasking111 · 11/07/2019 22:57

Need some quinine and we are out of tonic Grin

There are mosquitos all over the U.K. You get tons of them near bodies of freshwater particularly.

Duckyneedsaclean · 11/07/2019 23:09

There's loads of mosquitos in the UK 🤨

Rachelover40 · 11/07/2019 23:16

We have them in the summer. Invest in good insect repellant, Jungle is recommended.

ZebrasAreBras · 11/07/2019 23:20

UK has reportedly been swarmed with mozzies which came up with the Saharan bubble.

I was bitten to fuck sitting in a pub garden last Friday night. It was holiday-in Greece-level biting.

EskewedBeef · 11/07/2019 23:23

I'm genuinely surprised that you've got to adulthood without coming across mosquitoes in the UK!

WholelottaPaint · 11/07/2019 23:27

I'm genuinely surprised that you've got to adulthood without coming across mosquitoes in the UK! I got to 35 before experiencing mossies in the Uk and that would be because I moved to the South East!

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 12/07/2019 09:25

I grew up in wales and never saw a mosquito. I live in east anglia now and they are everywhere in the summer - I couldn't believe it the first time I saw one, I don't think they are nearly as common in Wales - I had no idea they were in the UK until I moved here.

SerendipityJane · 12/07/2019 10:04

May not be so funny in 10 years time if malaria becomes extant in the UK (again). Doesn't need to be that warm - just a little less cold in winter. Would certainly liven up the discussions on free prescriptions.

CookPassBabtridge · 12/07/2019 10:14

I never realised we got them in the UK as I was never bitten, then moved abroad in my 20s and was always covered in bites. Then moved back to the Uk and they started biting me here.. see them all the time now.

Witchend · 12/07/2019 10:35

I thought Wales was the land of the mosquito. Certainly my dad was always covered on our holidays.

BarbedBloom · 12/07/2019 11:42

I live in wales and have seen loads of them over the years though I have seen a lot more than usual this year. The cats enjoy chasing them round though

justasking111 · 12/07/2019 12:39

It drove our spaniel demented last night.

LaLaLamp · 13/07/2019 00:11

I've only ever heard them called gnats over here, are they the same?

mindutopia · 13/07/2019 07:46

We got eaten alive by mosquitoes camping in Wales a few summers ago. Maybe you just aren’t usually outside in the evenings?
