Metal straw danger *contains horrific death

I switched from plastic straws to metal and didn’t consider their danger.

Coroner recommends that ‘metal drinking straws should never be used with a lid that fixes them in place, and warned that 'great care should be taken' while using them.’

The article also says that she normally drank around half a litre of vodka a day from said mason jars and was prone to falling like a 'sack of spuds' because of it and pain.

I wouldn't let kids run with them, but keep it in perspective.

"Medical staff had never seen an injury like that. They said it was unusual more than anything else.""

As sad as the accident is, the straws themselves are not inherently dangerous.
They're like toothbrushes, lollypops etc - you shouldn't walk around with something in your mouth.
A friend of a friend's DD fell while carrying a pencil - it went through the corner of her eye socket and into her brain (amazingly she suffered no brain damage and her eye recovered).
A freak accident, which serves as a cautionary tale so we remind our children not to run with pencils/walk around while brushing their teeth/etc etc.
Tbh I suspect metal straws will become less and less popular as people chip/break their teeth or crack glasses with them, and I imagine most will either stop using straws altogether or move to silicone.

I e just remember them at when we were at school my friend at home say on a knitting needle and it went through her thigh!

She was lucky that it didn’t hit an artery but when she told us about it we were all very squeamish about it!

I remember reading about a lady that was cutting up vegetables on a little chopping board, on her lap on the sofa & the knife slipped of the ved into her leg.

I never leave knives upright in the dishwasher anymore either.
