Does Ben & Jerry’s normally have a plastic peel off seal under the cardboard lid?

The bigger pots not the single serve ones?

Reason I’m asking is that I got one earlier from Pizza Hut takeaway and just got round to giving it to DS (& me!), and it doesn’t look quite right.

The cardboard lid comes straight off and nothing underneath it like a plastic peel back seal type of thing, and the ice cream looks a bit churned up & refrozen... the outside is very sticky and it’s all a bit unattractively unhygienic looking really.
Beyond the way you’d normally expect them to look that is, being stuffed in a moped and zoomed to you on a hot day!

Am I being needlessly concerned to say we shouldn’t eat it?

I wouldn't.

GreenGrowTheRushesOhh · 05/07/2019 20:17

I'm in a different country but here it has a plastic seal around the top of the lid (on the outside) that you have to remove, so you can tell whether it has been previously opened or not.

If you're feeling motivated enough I'd call Pizza Hut. But don't eat it.

ReganSomerset · 05/07/2019 20:18

I don't think they usually have a plastic lid, but the surface is generally stuck to the lid so it's hard to get off iyswim? It should be even. There is usually a plastic seal around the outside of the card lid IIRC.

Ooo no I wouldnt. I think they do have plastic peel back lids underneath

BorderlineExperimental · 05/07/2019 20:18

What Green says. They don't have the plastic to peel off under the lid but they should have a plastic wrap around the outside of the cardboard lid.

RainOrSun · 05/07/2019 20:19

I agree with above. B&J has a plastic collar, andvthen the cardboard lid straight onto the icecream.
Haagen Daz has the plastic film between icecream and lid.

That said, the stickiness and possible refrozen bit sounds like it perhaps shouldn't be eaten.

Cheesymonster · 05/07/2019 20:20

Having today watched a news clip on twitter of a woman licking the ice cream then putting it back in the supermarket freezer, I say ditch it.

GreenGrowTheRushesOhh · 05/07/2019 20:21

You can kinda sorta see what I mean in this pic, as others have said above it's a type of plastic collar thing.

riotlady · 05/07/2019 20:22

As pp said, there’s a plastic seal around the edge of the cardboard lid but there’s not a seal underneath, the cardboard touches the ice cream

Lurkeycakewoman · 05/07/2019 20:22

Email Ben and Jerry's they will compensate you.

Newname908 · 05/07/2019 20:24

Don’t do it. Did you never hear of the Tylenol murders?
As others have said it should have a plastic wrap and the lid should be stuck to the ice cream

WellThisIsShit · 05/07/2019 20:26

Thanks. Hummm I don’t remember any plastic outer wrap around the lid, that’s why I thought there would be one inside.

Although to be completely sure I will just check the bin and grill DS in case there’s a combo of me having a heat induced brain fart and DS not being patient enough after I put it away.

Off to investigate.

Sounds dodgy

Tentomidnight · 05/07/2019 20:27

Sounds as though somebody has eaten some then smoothed the top and replaced the lid 🤮

Tiredmum100 · 05/07/2019 20:36

There should be a plastic seal on the outside of the carton and nothing on the inside.

Nesssie · 05/07/2019 20:41

COuld it have melted and refrozen? It never freezes the same so looks a bit weird.

Plastic round the edge then the cardboard lid. No plastic under the cardboard.

WellThisIsShit · 05/07/2019 20:41

I was so hoping, but noooo, no outer seal. I knew it hadn’t come with one really, with just clutching at straws as we both really wanted that ice cream!

Ah well, pizza should be treat enough (is trying to tell myself sternly and virtuously, on this hot summers day. Tbh, it’s not working very well!).

Contact Pizza Hut and tell them, they should replaced

thenightsky · 05/07/2019 20:44

Pretty sure the ones I've bought have had a plastic seal around the outside of the lid, plus a circle of plastic under the lid with a pull tab.
