How much do tattoos hurt and where is the best place?

I really want to get a tiny tattoo but concerned about the pain. I don’t know what to compare it to ( have given birth twice with no pain relief except gas and air).

OK, if its money that is dictating then wait a while .
Most good Tattooists are booked months ahead anyway .

The price is by the time spent ( DH paid £80/hour for his)

Seriously they are there pretty much for life , don't tattoo is haste and repent at leisure Smile

The money was a joke, Remus’s thread encouraging everyone to splurge.

Some people quite like the pain, Im not one of them

I have a few different sizes but I had a really big one recently , almost 8 hours worth and I’d say the first hour or so isn’t too bad !

You will be fine with a small one, have it wherever you want rather than thinking about which areas would hurt the most

OddHoleySocks · 30/06/2019 16:49

I was warned against getting my tattoo where I got it (a lot of it was on my spine), and was advised to get one somewhere else first to make sure I could handle the pain.

I insisted. He finally agreed. It was a bit nippy, but wasn't anything like as painful as giving birth (I also just did gas and air). He was impressed that I didn't flinch. I was surprised that he thought I would.

unicornsrule · 30/06/2019 16:57

I was worried before i had my first small on that it would be really bad as i am awful with pain
It was fine like a scratching feeling
I had my first on my back
I now have 10 small
My wrist ones are my fav
Most painful was prob inner arm
I find tattoos addictive Wink

unicornsrule · 30/06/2019 16:58

I have wrists done, ankle , back, inner and outer arm

You might also want to take into consideration the tattoo design when considering placement and it's size. I was going to get a small tattoo, but the artist advised that the design I wanted would not look good shrunk down really small. So I've ended up with one much larger than I'd originally intended. But I still love it after 20 years. It hurt a bit, but it was more like a hot burning scratching feeling. Nothing too bad and only took an hour, iirc.

I had my foot done which is supposed to be the most painful place but it wasn’t actually that bad. It hurt more when it was healing as that took a couple of days. Having colour is worse as it’s going over the same skin that’s already tender.

Fanciedachange1 · 30/06/2019 18:07

I find the pain to be like if you had bad sunburn and someone dragged a needle across it. But it only hurts for a few seconds and when they stop to wipe the skin it doesn’t hurt at all. So an hour tattoo isn’t an hour of constant pain.

I found that my inner calf hurt the most, whereas my ribs were ok. I think it varies person to person.

JacquesHammer · 30/06/2019 18:12

The tattoo is yours pretty much for life (expensive and painful removal notwithstanding!)

Have the size you want and the place you want, don’t choose based on what might hurt less.

BellatrixLestat · 30/06/2019 18:45

It most certainly hurts less than labour a LOT less. If you've been through that a tattoo is nothing'! Go for it

Gabrielknight · 30/06/2019 18:49

Make sure your sure about its placement as removal hurts Alot more than getting it!

TheSassyAssassin · 30/06/2019 18:51

Being stitched back up for 10 mins after giving birth was waaaaay more painful than my 2.5hr first tattoo. You'll be fine Fairy, enjoy your new ink! Smile

dustarr73 · 30/06/2019 20:50

I think it depends on what you want.A flower, bird might be ok,But anything with detail i wouldnt get "tiny".You will lose the detail and it will just look like a splodge.

Also pain is subjective.I thought my inner arm was a bitch. And the bone going over my wrist. But everything else was ok.
