Do I need to clean my hire car?

I've had a hire car for the last 3 weeks and it's being collected on Monday. It is pretty clean inside but obviously in our British summer weather has got a little dirty on the outside. I was planning to get it cleaned before it goes back but a couple of friends seemed to think this was mad. What is the norm?

I never have and I've never been charged for it. We usually hire when we're going camping so it always goes back filthy.

I use hire cars a lot and have never cleaned one before handing it back.
As long as it’s not filthy, and there’s no rubbish in the car I wouldn’t worry.

I've heard that some companies are starting to charge for it. But given that every car will need some attention before it is rented again that seems like gouging to me. If it is in the range of reasonable and you haven't left 3 weeks of rubbish in the car (and it sounds like you haven't), don't.

Thanks everyone. Yes inside fine apart from bit of dust and few bits on the floor from shoes. Outside just a bit mucky from the weather and roads. So think I will save the money.

Hired a car from enterprise 2 weeks ago, same question! I rang and asked the guy said absolutely not to do so because regardless they have to valet them before the next customer & they never expect them to come back clean
