Best essential oil mosquito repellent or candles

Looking for an essential oil or combinations to put in a plug in defuser or battery powered to go outside or by the back door to keep it open. Or candles that actual work.
Next question is recommendation of a defuser! We have an outdoor plug to use when we are out there. To repel mosquitoes, but flies and ticks would be an added bonus.

Now I’m completely confused, do I want one that is water and a few drops of oil, or one that you just add oil to and it heats? I don’t really want to humidify the room inside and I want it to be as concentrated as possible.

We use one of these automatic sprayers and they work really well. I'm in NZ though, not sure if there's something similar in UK.

When outside we use citronella candles or I've got citronella oil that goes in the steam diffuser (doesn't impact humidity). We also use joss sticks outside which work well too.

Thanks, will have a look. Any particular defuser you use? How much oil to water do you use?

Lidl have got bug killing plugs for a fiver, the ones that have a UV light and electrocute them.

TreeSunset · 26/06/2019 09:27

Thanks, will look at the spray and the UV plug, it might be the way to go.

I forgot to say, for the last couple of years I've used a fake paper wasp nest to deter wasps, its really effective.

And I've seen a gadget that uses a small electric shock to deal with wasp stings but haven't tried it.

Citronella is best.

Doterra do a blend called Shield - it has all the oils known to be insect repellents.

I have this diffuser which I like

TreeSunset · 26/06/2019 16:36

Thanks @TheInebriati I’ve added the wasp nest things.
@NEtoN10 is doterra an MLM? But a ready made blend sounds good. Think I might need a defuser wothibeing a humidifier. I wonder f I just leave some drops out that does the same thing?

Ah yes I think it might be... though I have an account and I buy about 5-10 oils a year... never been asked to sign anyone up or anything.

You could mix your own - buy little bottles from amazon and just use the oils they blend (see pic)

That’s ok if you can buy direct, didn’t want to have to find a seller and then keep getting hounded to sign up!

Doterra is 100% an MLM so I’d steer clear. You can get citronella candles and oils elsewhere without feeding into the MLM stuff.

Troels · 26/06/2019 18:33

I second, or third Citronella.
Amazon have it

NEtoN10 · 26/06/2019 22:53

sorry to derail....I feel so stupid. I watched that BBC documentary on MLMs and I've been using doterra for over a year and I didn't twig. I've never been asked to "recruit" anyone I just like the oil blend sticks and I buy a few a year and a few as gifts. I didn't realise it was one of those weird companies!

TreeSunset · 28/06/2019 18:26

Easy to do NE. I bought a load of scentsy and didn’t realise. Guessed at the doterra, and you didn’t try and get your family to part with their cash so all good!

Citronella has arrived and good old fashioned reed defusers to try
