Would you judge me for fancying Giles Brandreth?

Is it the kind of thing I shouldn’t admit to in public?

He writes series of novels where Oscar Wilde is a detective, which I think are excellent and he is clever, has a great sense of humour, collects teddy bears and is very entertaining, but I definitely don’t fancy him

HPLikecraft · 25/06/2019 23:04

You do know that he used to be a Tory MP?

Sammysquiz · 26/06/2019 06:48

I think he does a podcast with Susie Dent which is meant to be v good!

BrillyPribble · 26/06/2019 06:56

I also listen to him a lot on the radio (and on his podcast with Susie Dent - it is fab!) and he's very funny, witty and self-deprecating. I also used to think he was an unbearable twonk when he was on TV/an MP.
Either he's changed or I have.
I haven't seen him on gogglebox yet (it was mentioned in the most recent podcast), must look it up, Sheila Hancock is wonderful.

NicoPolastri · 26/06/2019 09:06

Ooh I will have a look at the podcast thank you!

I saw Nicolas Parsons in stockings and suspenders in Rocky Horror many years ago.

Gyles and Sheila were very funny in gogglebox, the jar and Johnson conversation was hilarious.

welliesarefuntowear · 26/06/2019 16:44

Oh gosh op, i thought it was just me. He's my guilty secret Blush

TheBigBallOfOil · 26/06/2019 16:50

I was at university with his son. Quite a talented actor but is now a barrister I think?
Gyles is much funnier than he used to be. Absolute scream on just a minute.

EnidButton · 26/06/2019 16:59

His son is pretty good looking.

EnidButton · 26/06/2019 17:01

Grin Giles and his daughter made a jumper patterns book! www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?productId=517288&catalogId=10051

ALongHardWinter · 26/06/2019 17:11
Grin
NicoPolastri · 26/06/2019 17:33

Yes very Enid thank you for that information. (His son, not the patterns book.)

I'll forgive you. He seems to me to be a person who would be exactly as you expect, doesn't generally take himself too seriously and you can have a joke with.

He was a Tory MP for a while but actually did something useful (unlike probably almost all the current lot)- he proposed the Bill which became the Marriage Act 1994, allowing weddings in places other than a church or registry office.

EnidButton · 27/06/2019 16:28

I bet you've added that book to your Amazon wish list Nico Grin

NicoPolastri · 27/06/2019 17:43

Naturally Enid Wink
So disappointed to find it’s out of stock...

Fingers crossed for Christmas restock 🤞🏻

ShatnersWig · 28/06/2019 08:07

I follow him on Twitter where he is also good value - funny and intelligent and often responds. He would undoubtedly be on my fantasy celebrity dinner party. He and Sheila Hancock on Celebrity Gogglebox are worthy of their own show.
