I'm a novice gardener and would like to add some colour to my garden. Can you recommend some nice low maintenance colourful trees and shrubs please. Other people's gardens always look like they've been professionally landscaped but I'm assured they're not! I like the idea of little trees of about 6ft high set in a circle of cream pebbles so easy to mow around them. We have a large front garden so would like to add some life and privacy to it! There's a red leaf tree that I like I don't know the name, but it stays colourful all year round, I would like to sow 3 or 4 smallish trees at the front. Do you just dig the dept of the pot and out of interest how do you get the make the circle look neat and perfect? Do you then sprinkle the pebbles over the soil around tree or add some sort or mesh? All advice welcome!

I think you're thinking of an acer - and yes, lovely.

St John’s Wort, big yellow flowers, hardy, I’ve ignored mine mostly.

A small ornamental cherry. You get pretty blossoms in the spring then bright red berries in the summer. They do miniature varieties.

Ceoanthus for beautiful blue flowers.

Fataia japonica for big bold leaves. My favourite.
