Anyone live or holidayed in Guernsey? Can you help me plan my trip :)

Hello!
I am planning to go to Guernsey, then onto Herm for a couple of nights, Sark for a night, and back to stay somewhere else in Guernsey for two nights before heading home.

Herm only seems to have the one hotel which makes it nice and easy so I'm trying to get booked into there.

I just wondered where you can recommend to stay in Guernsey? St Peter's Port seems to be the obvious place to start - there are a few hotels and I'm keen for something with a nice room with a balcony and a sea view ideally, although not sure what the weather would be like in early Sept so not sure if we'd get to enjoy it much!
Hotel doesn't need to be a spa or anything but if it has an indoor pool that's a bonus.
Ideally looking to go and explore, eat lots, do a bit of hiking and then chill at Herm and Sark before coming back to do a bit more walking and then go home.

I can't decide where to stay so I'm hoping someone local or someone who goes there a bit can advise! Thank you!

I don't think there's any hotels in the centre of SPP with an indoor pool, OGH has an outdoor pool. St Pierre Park has an indoor pool but no sea views.

Other option could be to stay outside of SPP on a bus route in, but after Herm and Sark it could be a nice change to be in the centre of Town.

Where are you staying in Sark?

Onatreebyariver · 21/06/2019 13:29

I'd stay at the Fermain Valley hotel. It's on the bus route to town - about 6 minutes on the bus. Or it's a 2km walk on a clearly marked footpath along the cliffs to get to St Peter Port. Gorgeous views overlooking Herm & Sark. Indoor pool. 2-3 restaurants, lovely grounds and a big terrace to have a drink outside if nice weather.

Get travel insurance! I didn't realise (stupidly) that they didn't have a reciprocal arrangement with the NHS, so have to pay for health care.

misscockerspaniel · 21/06/2019 13:52

Make sure you go to Victor Hugo's house - it has just been restored.

Aberforthsgoat · 21/06/2019 13:57

Thanks for the tips - the st Pierre park sounds lovely as does Fermain Valley.
I can’t remember the name of the one in Sark and don’t want to butcher it by attempting to spell it - I’ll have a look at my booking info when I get in but it’s widely renowned for the food apparently!

Go to the terrace bar cafe in st Peter port is fab!
If you like history the museum about ww2 is really interesting.

Get a bus pass rover ticket, bus is the best way to get around the island.

On herm walk around the island as it is beautiful, on sark hire bikes!

Aberforthsgoat · 21/06/2019 14:25

Oh that sounds lovely
@DreamingofSunshine it’s La Sablonnerie on Sark. Hope I’ve spelled that correctly!

I used to go to Guernsey often before my husband died. We always stayed at La Favorita when it was owned by Simon Wood (who, I believe, owned Herm Island at the time). It was bought out years ago, and is now the Fermain Valley Hotel, as already mentioned. It's in a glorious location, with stunning views, and cliff walks nearby. Easy to get to SPP by bus. Herm Island is delightful, especially if you're into wildlife and plants (it has its own species of shrew!), but can be enveloped in sea mist occasionally.
So, my choice would also be Fermain Valley.

Aberforthsgoat · 21/06/2019 15:23

People who have stayed at Fermaine and St Pierre - do you have any room recommendations?

@NanTheWiser sorry to hear about your husband and thanks for your suggestions, it really sounds lovely

No problem, Aberforthsgoat!

Aberforthsgoat · 21/06/2019 16:57

@Gottoloveabagel is Sark not walkable? Or just not as pretty? Smile

You can walk it it's just nice to cycle! All the islands are pretty Grin

Room 14 at the Fermain Valley.

LarkDescending · 21/06/2019 17:28

Assuming they haven't changed the numbering, room 14 was a Platinum room in the main (old) part of the building, with a little fireplace and a stunning view over the terrace to the sea.

It looked like the Platinum room on the website, though I remember the décor being duck-egg blue when I was last there a few years ago.

Another vote for the Fermain Valley, we stayed there and loved it

Aberforthsgoat · 21/06/2019 18:02

Ah I think the platinum rooms are sold out
On our dates they have some above the restaurant but not sure if that will be noisy

We stayed here when we went to Guernsey- it was totally lovely. www.thefarmhouse.gg/

LarkDescending · 21/06/2019 18:11

No it won't be noisy in the bit above the restaurant (IME). I've stayed in those too! (Did a looong court case in Guernsey).

DreamingofSunshine · 21/06/2019 18:30

No it won't be noisy by the restaurant.

La Sablonnierie is lovely. I would have a check on the Guernsey Harbours website to see if any cruise ships are in for your trip as it'll mean the museums are much busier, and the horse and carts in Sark would be booked up. It's not a big deal as busy in Guernsey isn't busy like a UK city, but it's just worth knowing :)

Aberforthsgoat · 21/06/2019 18:41

Oh great tip re cruise ships. And thanks - I have stayed in rooms above restaurants before and it was noisy so it put me off but doesn’t sound like it will be as I’m expecting.
Getting excited now! Just need to try and make all the dates work with each other, Sark is the only one I’ve booked so far

Diorissimo1985 · 21/06/2019 19:31

The Bella Luce is really lovely as well, worth a look!

Make sure you pre book your boat tickets to Herm and Sark too - the Sark one can sell out.

Aberforthsgoat · 21/06/2019 19:43

thank you! I will book all the crossings when I’ve booked all the hotels. I’m presuming you can do it online.
Couldn’t find the info on the harbours website the cruise ships unless I’m being blind!

We went to the little church that's all covered in shells and broken china. Also had a great meal at Da Nello in St Peter Port.
