Do I need to go to GP for suspected mastitis?

Just that really. Right breast is red, hot and too sore to feed from. Google tells me it's probably mastitis- do I need to go to the doctor or can it clear on it's own? TIA

When I had it I needed a course of antibiotics in the end so it may be worth ringing them.

Yes phone doc

It's worth going, you could need antibiotics. You won't want it to get worse unnecessarily!

Yes please do ring your GP, I’ve had mastitis quite a few times and have needed antibiotics in more than 1 occasion.

I hope you feel better soon

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 19/06/2019 07:58

Definitely-I was really ill and needed antibiotics

BabyMoonPie · 19/06/2019 08:06

It sounds like you need antibiotics. It's awful but the antibiotics should make you feel better quickly. It can be really nasty if not treated (I had to be admitted to hospital for IV antibiotics)

You might be able to clear it yourself if you express and clear the blockage. Jump in a hot shower and try to express, you might even be able to work out which section the blocked duct is. Massage away and see if you can unblock? The hot water helps.

It does hurt like hell, but means no antibiotics required so less hassle in long run.

Plus, the relief when it suddenly unblocks and starts shooting out is amazing! (Another reason why good to be in shower!)

I had antibiotics from the doctor who also recommended battling through and feeding dd. I cried when she latched on but persevered. I also laid on my front in the bath so my boobs were submerged in the hot water.
I hope you start feel better soon Flowers

I had a blocked duct recently and the only thing that cleared it was hot compresses. Best tip I had for a blocked duct was to fill up a disposable nappy with the hottest water you can stand and put it on the sore area. The nappy retains the heat but without you getting soggy. Mastitis is absolutely horrible though and can make you feel very poorly so if you are feeling rotten then head to the GP for some antibiotics

You definitely need to see the Dr and get the antibiotics into you before it gets worse and the infection really takes hold.
Mastitis is relatively easy to treat, and usually clears quite fast with the appropriate treatment.
Back in the days before antibiotics, women used to die from complications of mastitis!!

Celeriacacaca · 19/06/2019 14:38

Yes see Dr ASAP. It's nasty and you can deteriorate very quickly. Hope you're feeling better soon.

ForeignBodies · 19/06/2019 14:41

Yes. With my first of my DC I needed several courses of antibiotics and eventually intravenous antibiotics in hospital for mastitis. I left it too long relying on bloody cabbage leaves in my bra and massaging my breasts under a warm shower Angry. Get yourself to the GP!
