Wasps, but they've chosen a crap spot so will soon abandon it.

Am I being paranoid keeping my dog indoors? It's in a place she can reach

Hornets are no sweat in Europe. They just have an awful press. We lived with them for 7 years and no one ever got stung. If you have a hornet you mustn't kill it just put a glass over it and stick it outside. If you kill one 2 will come.

That looks like a wasp nest. I have seen Asian hornets - they are huge.

DishingOutDone · 18/06/2019 19:56

text the picture to rentokill, get a quote, send all to landlord.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 18/06/2019 19:57

You have no choice but to give your notice to your landlord and leave immediately.

Burn the house, that'll sort it.

bigtoes · 18/06/2019 20:03

😭😭😭 but I just redecorated!

I think you'd definitely have to send a photo to your landlord, if you were planning on going down the fire route.

Wintersnowdrop · 18/06/2019 20:07

It might be cheaper to contact a local pest control. We had wasps in our wall last year. It cost £50 to get a local pest control bloke out . We also had emergency cover on our house insurance but we didn’t use that. Not sure if it’s your landlords responsibility though.

DishingOutDone · 18/06/2019 20:07

If you kill one 2 will come - just in case you missed that bit.

Actually I have just seen something on FB today about a certain species of wasp that can be a bit tricky. The nest looked just like that. I think perhaps professional advice might be needed to relocate.

bigtoes · 19/06/2019 18:25

I sent the photo to the land lord and he's sending the gardener/handyman around. I hope he knows what he's doing!!

OP posts:
crosstalk · 19/06/2019 18:38

OP worth sending a bigger picture if you can bear to go near it, before the handyman comes, to an insect ID site on facebook.

Most wasp nests are bigger than that by now but as PPs have said, it's not a great position for a wasp nest so they may have abandoned it already. Have you watched for any critters coming out? Can you take a photo?

It doesn't look like a European hornet nest. But you need to make sure your landlord's handyman identifies it. The EA is on high alert for Asian hornets which besides being aggressive eat honey bees. Everyone is being asked to report them and nests if seen.

Hawkmoth · 19/06/2019 19:14

I think it might be these

The wasps nest we had in our loft didn’t look anything like that, ours was more like a triangular paper lampshade.

bigtoes · 19/06/2019 19:35

Yes @Hawkmoth it seems like a Saxon wasp as the nest sounds very similar to that description with the hole in the bottom where the waste falls out onto a little pile. Also they are mainly black with small yellow stripes.
Am glad to read they are mainly friendly 😅
