Londoners - restaurant recommendations in/around Farringdon?

I’m going cross eyed from googling!

I’m looking for good, hearty food, probably European/British pub style or even a smokehouse type menu, nothing too fancy or expensive. We’ll be ending up in this area after a long day out so something on the more casual/cosy side would be good but definitely a sat down at a table type place.

Had a look at Smiths at Smithfield which looks amazing but is probably just a bit too fancy for our group, whereas somewhere like Byron is too casual.

Am I looking for something that doesn’t exist?! Any personal recommendations?

www.comptoirgascon.com/
3 courses and a cocktail for £20. The a la carte is really good tbh...

Smiths used to be 3 floors. Top was fancy, middle floor less so, ground floor less again. Not sure if that is still the case?

Now I’m spoilt for choice! These are perfect, thank you Smile

Yes, I think Smiths should have a bit that suits you.

There’s also Quality Chop house, which does amazing and hearty food. It may be a bit fancy for what you’re looking for.

Vinoteca - steaks, wine, delicious and pretty casual.

Mm, I slightly envy you now! I used to work around there and really miss it!

St John’s is amazing - very British but you have to be OK with offal. I wouldn’t say it’s fancy but it is expensive so may not be what you’re after

St John.

Bleeding Heart Bistro would be my recommendation. The restaurant is more fancy.

Smiths is probably best option. The downstairs is very unfussy. I don't know if they still have it on the menu but the smoked haddock macaroni cheese used to be to die for.

The Eagle (Farringdon road - Gastropub) does the most amazing steak sandwiches..

Fox & anchor!

Down beside Smithfield, near smiths, proper old pub.

Or polpo for Italian if it’s still there?

Rainatnight · 18/06/2019 11:17

OMG, the steak sandwiches in the Eagle!!! What joy.

Verite1 · 18/06/2019 11:24

There is a hix round corner from Farringdon. Not been to that one, but been to soho and bank side one and they are generally good hearty food.

Fleabag123 · 18/06/2019 13:11

Oh yes The Eagle is amazing! That might tick all your boxes

fluffiphlox · 18/06/2019 13:46

The Bleeding Heart is very good.
Also, have a look at The Wilmington.

Thank you everyone. We have booked the bleeding heart bistro - looks ace! So much to choose from, I had a job making my mind up, and was a little limited for availability trying to book this close.

MN definitely beats tripadvisor!
