Protein in urine - worried

I've had a routine urine analysis as part of a private medical. I'm not pregnant so no pre-eclampsia risk.

The report has came through and they've said that I have protein in my urine ( it was positive ++).

Everything I'm googling is saying kidney disease or diabetes. What is the non-scary answer if there is one?

I have been told to book an appointment to see my GP within the next two weeks and the earliest I can get is 1st July.

Has anyone else ever had this?

Things like stress and dehydration can cause protein in urine sometimes. Also strenuous exercise. Try not to panic!

I had +++ protein in my urine years and years ago. Never did get to the bottom of it! Still alive!

Agreeing with Silverdapple above -the non-scary answer is it is just a condition that means nothing! I have it too- it was discovered when I did the medical to join the army cadets, unfortunately on a Sunday morning. Had a very worried night until I got to the GP (in the good old days) on the Monday. Was tested again, and yes the protein was there, but it is just a natural condition in some people and doesn't mean a thing. I'm in my 50s now and it's never caused any problem.

I was definitely very stressed before the appointment and had only had about 2 hours sleep. But I wasn't dehydrated.

Reassuring to know that it isn't always kidney failure or diabetes!

Fingers crossed Sad

UTI would explain it too, how do you know it’s not that?

Ursaminor · 17/06/2019 23:14

The army doctor wound me up with tales of kidney disease too - sorry you have to wait so long to have your mind put at ease.

Nikhedonia · 17/06/2019 23:16

@Refilona had many UTI's and kidney infections and have no symptoms of either

@Ursaminor thank you. Sorry you have been given a scare too

Can also be a sign of vaginal discharge mixed in with urine!
Might be a total fluke. If you’re otherwise well I would make the next available appt and try not to worry too much.
