Anyone else love Test Match Special even though they don't really understand cricket?

Just that, really. I've got an 8 week old LO and the TMS coverage of the Cricket World Cup is my new best friend (as all my other, child-free friends are out having fun with their expendable income and free time).

I don't really know much about cricket other than the very basics. I certainly don't know what a dot ball is or wtf 'cow corner' is. But somehow, it doesn't matter - TMS is just so comforting when DS is kicking off for the umpteenth time. Anyone else have this? Or I am just really weird?

I love TMS - it is so comforting and brings to mind my lovely late Dad and Uncle who also loved it. They both played as did my brothers, and Mum and I did the teas. DH also plays cricket and we have been to Australia and the West Indies to watch England.

TMS celebrated its 60th anniversary a couple of years ago and there was the most wonderful podcast - there's a link on this site.

There are some beautiful stories on this and I guarantee you will have a little cry (especially at the lady who had it on when she gave birth, and I also love the story of the lad at the blind school...), in fact I'm tearing up just thinking about it...

Oh and congratulatons on your new baby OP! Flowers

jenthelibrarian · 11/07/2019 16:50

Oooh! Love watching the cricket.
I can do all the umpire hand-signals Smile
Similarly I recommend the daily highlights of the Tour de France in which you can enjoy men with large thighs travelling through delightful French countryside.
The mountain stages are quite scary if you're not good at heights: I spend all my time muttering 'Who built a road up that cliff?? It's just not necessary'

I thought there must be a cricket thread somewhere!

Sky have apparently promised to make the final freely available (although I don't know how), so hoping to be able to have it on on Sunday.

I absolutely love cricket and I have met Blowers. Absolute gent. I was working behind the bar at a test match many years ago and he was the only person for days who spoke to the bar staff like we were actual human beings. He was genuinely interested in us. He is a wonderful man.

CMOTDibbler · 11/07/2019 17:35

I don't have any interest in cricket, but DH adores it and I have come to really enjoy TMS. I love the wittering about cake and pigeons!

Floralnomad · 11/07/2019 17:41

I could bore people about cricket all day long . I’d assume sky are going to show it on the Soortsmix channel , there have been a couple of games on there already ( on Saturdays when there were 2 games on) . I’ve watched more or less every game and they did play well today .

Sandsnake · 11/07/2019 17:43

I adore cricket and I adore TMS. I can totally see how you could love TMS without being interested in cricket though! I am still on cloud nine after today’s result - just incredible.Smile

Sandsnake · 11/07/2019 17:45

That’s wonderful to hear about Blowers howwudufeel. He does come across as an absolute gent.

Through the now tv app possibly?

BringMeTea · 11/07/2019 17:49

What a great day of cricket! Yes love TMS. So relaxing.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/07/2019 17:50

I'm hoping it'll be terrestrial (or freeview) — my grandma loves it, but doesn't have the internet.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/07/2019 17:51

Oh, this sounds good!

**Coverage starts at 9:00am on Channel 4 before moving to More 4 at 1:15pm to accommodate the British Grand Prix.

The cricket will then return to Channel 4 after the conclusion of the Formula 1 race.**

Blueemeraldagain · 11/07/2019 17:52

I love watching or listening to cricket. There’s just something so relaxing or soothing about it. Although I’m English and my DP is Australian so he’s not feeling particularly relaxed this evening!

averythinline · 11/07/2019 18:01

Love TMS - My DC born in 2005 so spent the hot summer BF/watching the ashes - with the radio commentary...and havent really stopped since Grin

but it is a backdrop to our lives when on....
I didnt really have a clue about cricket when started listening and now generally l know most of it but get the fielding positions leg/off mixed up not sure why ... although I reckon could do a cricket googlebox as always get the wickets right I have an exceptional eye for LBW!

I'm off to the cricket club as we have tickets to Proms at the Pavilion but sitting inside watching the cricket whilst listening 😁

Come in England!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/07/2019 14:38

Oh it's exciting... I thought I'd watch and iron, but the ironing isn't really getting done!

kiltedsheep · 14/07/2019 14:44

I'm sort of worried that 242 is going to be tough to chase

kiltedsheep · 14/07/2019 14:44

But now we can change over to Wimbledon for a bit! What a Sunday!
