Colonoscopy without sedation?

Hi all,

I have a colonoscopy on the weekend and really don't want to have the sedation and would prefer just the gas & air.

I have had a Gastroscopy without & whilst not plesant wasn't the worst thing ever even though i was a nervous wreck beforehand.

My question is has anyone had a colonoscopy without sedation & could please tell me what it is like?

Thank you.

DH always has them without sedation (he has one every few years to check on his ulcerative colitis). Apparently the sedation they use doesn't work on him, I'm not sure why, but it does make him horribly nauseous for days afterwards. The colonoscopy without sedation is preferable to that, not pleasant but not as awful as days of nausea. For him the w worst part by far is the moviprep, I hope you can cope with that.

Personally I'd go for the sedation.

I had a colonoscopy without sedation or gas and air and it was fine , mild discomfort at worst . I declined sedation because it was midazolam which makes me extremely sick and short of breath for hours afterwards . Good luck OP .

Thank you everyone for answering.

Had it done and didnt hurt at all and was in and out of the hospital in 30 minutes.

Moviprep was the worst bit.

glad to hear.

my experience was that it was unpleasant, especially the noise if thd compressor and that the preparation was worse.

IAmDetermined · 16/06/2019 14:40

Glad to hear that OP. My husband has just been referred for investigations like this.
He has received his appointment letter but mentions nothing about a colonoscopy or any pre treatment? Should I assume that this appointment is just an initial one? Surely they would tell you if they were a doing a procedure like that?

missyB1 · 16/06/2019 14:48

IAm where does the appointment letter say he is going? Which department?

Glad it went well. Until the last 3 I always said the same - the prep was the worst part and the colonoscopy was a breeze.

Not sure what's changed for me but these last 3 that I've had done have been really painful.

I wasn't offered anything and i had one the other month.

The lube is ahem very effective, the worst part was the air blowing.... Don't wear jeans either, they didn't tell me that and good job i had a long jumper on as i couldn't do them up after Confused

I'm due to have one in July - quite happy to say yes to sedation - but I'm more worrying about the Moviprep. I really struggle to get strange tasting fluids down (can't manage cystitis treatment powders nor soluble aspirin for example), and I'm really concerned I'll fail to drink it without throwing it all back up again.

@IAmDetermined

I was referred originally to Gastro Drs & it was them that arranged the Colonoscopy

That said i was sent for the Endoscopy by another Dr and by passed the gastro.

Maybe your Dh can call & ask beforehand.

@Sadik

I sipped it and it wasn't as bad i made the mistake of a big gulp at 1st and felt like i was going to vomit.

Another poster mentioned mixing it with a juice,maybe that will help?

I think suggestion of straw also sounds good, that and slowly & hopefully I'll get it down...

You can ask for different prep. I can't tolerate moviorep - the large quantity of fluid makes me sick. I had to drink 1 and a half litres over an hour and then the same again 2 hours later. I just threw the whole lot back up.

Now I have picolax. The two sachets are made up in a small glass of water and then you just fluifs lots of normal fluids. That's fine for me. I did have to specifically ask for it though.
