Do websites track were you are in the world?

A friend I know has their own website, I am pretending I don’t know about it, but I do (I know it sounds strange, too long and frankly boring to explain) and I look at now and again. Do websites log information about the whereabouts of visitors? Because I live out in the wilds (let’s say ‘Isle of Skye’ for arguments sake) and if this person sees that there have been 6 visits from Skye then they will definitely know it’s me. Because I am their only friend who lives there and they will put 2 and 2 together.
But is this something that websites do? (It’s a .co.uk website) Thanks!

Yes, they can track the IP.
There is however an easy way out, Use a VPN app.
I have Psiphon on my phone and I can even pick which country I want my IP based in. So one day I am in Japan, the other Bulgaria, and so on.
You don't have to the VPN turned on constantly, there is an on and off button.

Yes. There's even web programmes that can show the website owner a map of the traffic. If it's a popular website it won't matter,I doubt your friend would track IPs, but if it isn't well visited you may well be tumbled!

Eek, I’m afraid that’s very easy to see. It’s one of the key demographics that will come up if they analyse their data. Doesn’t necessarily mean they will see it though! If they have 7000 views from London, 4000 from Birmingham, 3500 from Hull etc, then they probably won’t scroll all the way to the single digits at the bottom.

Yes of course they can. I have my own business and can look where people who visit my site are.

AlunWynsKnee · 11/06/2019 23:51

Absolutely. It's very easy to expose information about users of a site.

Blush Well, not really what I was hoping to hear, I’ve almost certainly been rumbled then, but thanks for the info!
How accurately do they pinpoint location? Is it to the nearest big town?

Whenever I check my ip with a tracker it is within a 5 km range to where I really am, but as I said use a VPN, super easy
