What does the word “Mykonos” mean to you?

What image is conjured up?
What connotations does it have?

If you said “Salou” to me, I’d think brits abroad package holiday. (I’ve actually been and really enjoyed!!)

or “Faliraki” I’d think cheap party destination for 18 year olds

Expensive, Greek island, adults only holiday destination (ie more boutique than family)

I know it's a Greek Island but nothing else. I thought it was the one with the blue and white buildings, but thinking about it, I think that's Santorini?

But I wouldn't conjure up an image without doing my own research into a place. So many people make assumptions about various popular holiday destinations that are either completely wrong or only apply to a tiny percentage of a region/island.

If you were daft enough to book a holiday based on anecdotal comments made by a load of misinformed strangers, you could find yourself on holiday in party central when you want quiet and authentic or vice versa. Which is really not necessary at all when all the information is there at your fingertips (properly researched travel guides, Google streetview etc).

Yep - Greek Island now popular with gay men but mostly Shirley Valentine, absolutely love that film "Hiya wall" and love Greek Islands
