Is it inevitable that teenage boys will look at porn? How to manage this?

DS 12 has an old iphone of mine, he’s had it since starting secondary last September. On the whole he’s been pretty sensible with it as far as we know - he lets us check it whenever etc and the worse he seems to do are texting lots of gibberish with some mild swearing.

When we gave it to him, we set the restrictions so that he couldn’t download any apps without asking permission and Safari / other browsers were switched off. Recently he has asked to have safari turned on - all his friends have it, apparently, and occasionally they are asked to use it in class for work.

Initially, we didn’t put safari on to prevent him looking up / stumbling on porn / adult / horror content, I guess. At home, he uses an iPad in the living room where we can see. It’s different with a phone, especially when he’s with friends rather than at home with us. I know there is a restricted setting I can use, not convinced that it really works.

So advice please: how do you handle / manage this with your preteen / teenage boys?

F for future reference. Our boy doesn't yet have a phone for this reason, but is still at Primary. Worried for when he has one.
