What would life be like if everyone was asexual

This is random but I had a dream about it. Due to too many people damaging the planet, there was some sort of plague/airborne condition whereby every single person entirely lost their sex drives - no hormones or anything could revive it. What would life actually look like?

I think people would still have babies. Plenty of people with no sex drive still have sex to TTC.

On their own or in couples?

Would we still have a drive to reproduce?
I think there would be more ivf. Conception would become more medicalised. Even if people were willing to try to have sex despite the lack of drive, they wouldn't have had as much practice so more people wouldn't be very good at it.

Eminybob · 04/06/2019 14:03

I was thinking in couples, but I guess people may not couple up if they don’t fancy other people.

PeppermintMe · 04/06/2019 14:27

Interesting. I wonder if other drives would take over instead? The drive for power or wealth?
If sex wasn't fetishised then how would products be sold? They'd have to appeal to some other drive we have. Presumably the sale of grooming and beauty products would collapse.
Would people continue to couple up? Maybe there would be more tribalism as people seek to find like minded people to live amongst. Wow. Lots of questions. What thoughts have you had OP?

Sounds like a great plot for a novel.

formerbabe · 04/06/2019 14:58

Very interesting question and I agree a brilliant plot for a book

formerbabe · 04/06/2019 14:59

I agree some people would still have children but the population would rapidly decrease I think. There would be no accidental pregnancies.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 04/06/2019 17:36

I'd read that book!

I have been thinking a bit more about this. There would be no rape, no pornography, no sexual child abuse. I wonder if society would be less sexist if women were no longer valued only for their sexual attractiveness, and they instead where valued for their intelligence and other abilities. Would romance be obsolete, and would people still fall in love? Fascinating.

TooGood2BeFalse · 05/06/2019 18:10

Isn't rape/sexual abuse more often about power and control though? Not sure lack of desire would eliminate it.

Also, imagine literature and the arts...would they still exist? They'd certainly be very different

TimeIhadaNameChange · 05/06/2019 19:29

I've had a similar thought experiment running in my head, but in my case instead of asexuality I've changed things so that it's women who are run on testosterone, not men. So the sex with the penis, which can be forced into women, is not the sex which has the strength advantage.

That would mean that there would still be a lot of reproduction, but much less rape.

Hecateh · 05/06/2019 22:06

My cynical view is that the population would drop to start with - which would be seen as positive and then one leader, DT if it happened now would realise that population was dropping and as 'Murica' is the greatest they can take advantage of this by ensuring women go into centres where they are repeatedly impregnated and give birth to you 'Murican' men. With female babies allowed to live so long as they meet specific genetic criteria meaning they will be slim and blond (ornamental from early teens to mid 20s) and (fertile mid 20s to mid 30s).

marvellousnightforamooncup · 05/06/2019 22:21

It's hard to know about rapes. I wonder how many are about power and control and how many about sex drive and opportunity.

Do you think things would be more equal? There would still be hetero and homo romantic people and still the urge to have children. Goodness knows TTC sex can be a bloody chore not a romantic delight anyway.

It could just make society into Gilead and instead of freedom we'd be handmaids.

Sorry, these are random musings. I'm tired.
