Are there any other middle aged fans of KPop here?

Or is it just me juggling HRT and NCT? Blush

It's my DN's fault for bombarding me with BTS videos when she got into them last year. I started getting recommendations for other groups on YouTube, and it just crept up on me. While I was curating my summer playlists this afternoon - I take my seasonal playlists very seriously - I was surprised at how much KPop I listen to now.

I tried lurking on a KPop forum but it was surprisingly intense and dramatic, I suppose because the main demographic consists of intense and dramatic teenagers.

If anyone is on the fence or uniformed about KPop I will now attempt to lure you in...

And if that hasn't worked I shall namechange and get back in the music closet.

I listened to your last link (well, half of it). It sounds like Western pop but sung in Korean, or am I missing something?

EyesNoseLips · 01/06/2019 22:44

Villanellesproudmum Your comment is literally surrounded by links! Grin

No, you've got it. KPop is based on Western pop music. They usually sing in a mix of Korean and English.

Can see the links you have posted but I’ve never heard of them.

JuneFromBethesda · 01/06/2019 22:51

Oh, ok. It just doesn’t seem particularly distinctive to me. BTS sound like every other boy band ever. But I realise I’m not the target audience!

abbiecloud · 01/06/2019 22:53

How are BTS different to every other boy band who has gone before them ? They reminded me of New Kids on BGT

EyesNoseLips · 01/06/2019 22:55

Yeah, I thought it might be futile...

OK, I'll get back to lurking!

K Pop has got more westernized in the last few years. It used to be a lot more camp and cutesy, but I guess that doesn't sell well outside of Asia. I once watched a performance of a girl band who were singing and dancing with real drinks in slushie cups taped to their heads. It was fascinating!

stucknoue · 01/06/2019 23:12

Dd is crazy about kpop so I'm bombarded with it. Her dad is pretty keen but I think it's the pretty girls more than the music!

Osquito · 01/06/2019 23:13

I don’t particularly like anything I’ve heard (except this mashup ) and find the whole KPop industry extremely creepy...
BUT I think Jennie was so pretty in her Solo video & Lisa (Thai one?) is a brilliant dancer.

I love BTS! Just like you, it's because my daughter made me watch loads of videos and I set myself the challenge of being able to distinguish each member. I admire their work ethic and the message they send to their fans. Watched the Wembley concert on V+ Live stream last night. Absolute favourite was Taeyheung singing Singularity.

BruceTheMoose · 02/06/2019 09:00

I'm not middle aged, I'm 30, but I love Kpop. Got7, Monsta X and BlackPink are my favourites. I also have a massive crush on Amber Liu who used to be in f(x).

I got into it after seeing BTS pop up on my Instagram feed and I started watching their videos and it just spiralled from there and I became a bit obsessed Blush

Cherrysoup · 02/06/2019 11:42

DN was at the BTS concert last night. I had never heard of them until she said she was going. I saw them on BGT and couldn’t work out if they were going androgynous or for a really feminine look.

kitk2tty · 02/06/2019 12:34

Hii🙋 I too love me some k pop. I got into it because I was interested in learning Korean, so I had a peek into their entertainment world.. and well..

SammySamSam09 · 02/06/2019 12:41

My daughter loves KPop and its because she feels its clean, happy and not sexualised music.
She has autism and is an older teen, doesn't like western music which I understand tbf as most of it is shit these days.
I'm into indie music myself but I don't mind having kpop music on in the car if that's what she wants.

Laiste · 02/06/2019 12:48

YANBU to like any type of music at any age really.

I watched the first link and personally found it quite generic. Just plinky plonky pop with forin' words Grin But enjoy!

Emzmum · 02/06/2019 12:54

BTS' Spring Day is such a beautiful, sad song. Just watched the video with English lyrics. Allegedly a tribute to those who lost their lives in the Sewol Ferry disaster.
