Blazers - is this correct?

So my DS started secondary school in September and wears a blazer.

The other day my DP pointed out that he shouldn't be doing up the bottom button on his blazer because it doesn't look right.

Is this right???

Well I don't know about blazer etiquette, but I would imagine he looks a bit military all buttoned up. It's a bit late in the year to be so formal, by this point in year 7, dd had a 3 inch tie and had ditched the blazer at every opportunity... do people do blazers up??

Yes. Traditionally, a man never did up the bottom button of a blazer or a waistcoat. No idea why.

I know the ‘rule’ for men’s suit jackets is, from the top button down:

always
Sometimes
Never

So, always have the top button fastened, sometimes the middle one (if you have a middle button) and never the bottom button.

No idea why that posted twice?

ASauvignonADay · 09/05/2019 21:54

Who knows. Very few of our lot at school actually button theirs up!

horizontalis · 09/05/2019 21:58

The bottom button is left undone so that you can sit on a horse, believe it or not.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 09/05/2019 21:59

Yup. Bottom button for chaps never done up.

Can’t remember my son or daughter ever buttoning up their blazers. Maybe in church once or twice.

BackforGood · 09/05/2019 22:01

tbh, Once he gets to school, he'll find no-one does up any of their blazer buttons Grin

BlackCatsRock · 09/05/2019 22:08

Thank you everyone, that's very interesting!

My DS is quite particular and likes to have his buttons done up!

In my school it was a rule to have your blazer on and buttoned up the whole time so it seems normal to me 🤷🏻‍♀️
