What does it mean when someone says...

“I can do” in response to being asked if they want to do something? (I’m being very pedantic here)

Eg-
Do you want to go to the cinema
“I can do”

To me it’s an unusual response that I don’t really understand, does it mean they don’t want to go but will do? Does it mean they haven’t made their mind up?

DH uses it all the time and gets annoyed at me asking for clarification but I think it’s a weird way of answering!

@cottonwoolmouth aaaah he does this too! But I really don’t want my dc using it so I’m a right arsehole about it when he says it, I go “YES PLEASE”

My DH says that (he's not Northern) and it drives me potty.

I know you/we can do something, I want to know if you want to or will do it.

To me it sounds like "Don't mind - you sort it."

PhalangeReginaPhalange · 09/05/2019 10:35

@MrsMigginsLovelyBaps absobloodyloutley ! I’m learning now it may be because he is northern but the amount of times I’m like what does that mean you would think he would save himself the grief and just be like
“ yeah sounds good”

To me it means "I can if you want to"
I don't like making decision, in case something goes wrong and I always end up blaming myself, so I'd rather the other person makes the final decision. So I won't say "yes let's do that" I will say "yeah can do" or "I can do", because for some reason that feels like less of a commitment.

CylindraceousNicholas · 09/05/2019 10:37

It's a "don't mind, up for it if you are" thing. I am from the South.

To me it’s “I can do, but I might not”, rather rude and arrogant actually!

PhalangeReginaPhalange · 09/05/2019 10:49

@comi this is how I felt!
