Car park arguement, with diagram.

I was waiting in a car park yesterday which is notorious for being difficult to park in. It was full but I knew someone would have to leave at some point so sat and waited. Nobody else waited.

As I was waiting a couple came out the building to go to their car (car A), I was in prime position to go down their row after they came out so was happy nobody else would get the space as by now a couple of other cars were circling. Car A was faffing about and being slow leaving. While waiting someone else came to their car to leave (car B). They ended up exiting their row before A.

And as I was sat there and B came out a 4x4 shot past me and went down that second row. But I didn't care because I thought A is about to leave and I will have their space. A left, I turned down the row to find the 4x4 in A's space with an empty space behind them. He'd gone into space B and then pulled forward into a.

I asked him to move back as I'd been waiting for that space. He refused as he said if he was in space B he wouldn't be able to reverse it. Even though another car had managed fine. I pointed out to him I was going to end up with no space as by the time I reversed out the row and then went down the other row someone else would have the space but he could move back in 2 seconds. He refused again. I started reversing out the row and sure enough another car came past, went down the second row and got space B.

He was being an ignorant twat wasnt he?

By waiting so far down you didn’t really make your intention to park there very clear.

He saw the chance to drive through a space so did.

Blueuggboots · 04/05/2019 06:55

Um, no. I think you were entitled. You've got every right to ask, he's got every right to say no.

NicoAndTheNiners · 04/05/2019 06:57

I had to wait there or car A couldn't get out, the rows are only one car width wide.

If the car park is that narrow then I certainly don’t blame him for taking a “drive through” space with a 4 X 4 especially when the space is right at the end of the car park!

NicoAndTheNiners · 04/05/2019 07:02

I guess. But I bet if B had been the only space available he'd have parked there and managed! And he had to squeeze past me to get there and I was indicating so he'd have known i was waiting. Grin

Just irritating I'd been waiting so long and he comes in and gets my space! Had to wait another #20 mins.

He could have gone into space B and saved it for you while you drove round and then gone back into space A ?

MarvinMarvinson · 04/05/2019 07:04

I don't think he was a twat really. You were just unlucky. If someone got to space b that quickly I don't suppose they'd have been impressed with him pissing around pulling back and forth across 2 spaces. It could even have caused an accident.

Sirzy · 04/05/2019 07:06

And it sounds like the delay in getting the other space only came because you where busy having a discussion with him. If you had gone around straight away your chances of getting it would have been much better

thesunwillout · 04/05/2019 07:12

He was a twat

NicoAndTheNiners · 04/05/2019 07:15

Talking to him took 20 seconds. My chances of getting a space would have been even better if he had waited his turn and not stolen my space. Grin

But I accept I was unlucky and maybe he wasn't a twat. I wouldn't have done what he did though. Behind space B there's actually a little bend in the row so cars can back out that end space. It may have been tight but it's doable.

I normally try and avoid that car park but I had loads of boxes to carry and it's the nearest one to the building.

sackrifice · 04/05/2019 07:17

Why didnt you just drive into B?

Snappedandfarted2019 · 04/05/2019 07:18

It’s really a non issue op it’s been and gone

abcriskringle · 04/05/2019 07:19

Oh this happened to me once! Similar set up and the tosspot pulled forward. Bloody irritating as what else would you be doing hovering by a car about to leave??! YANBU as far as I'm concerned, I'm getting annoyed just remembering it.

MyKingdomForBrie · 04/05/2019 07:21

Of course he was a fucking twat!! He stole the space you were waiting for! What the hell is wrong with the world that expecting basic courtesy is now 'entitled'.

If someone is waiting and indicating for a space it's not ok to nick it, end of.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/05/2019 07:21

I'm afraid I would have pulled forward into B too Blush

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/05/2019 07:21

A, sorry.

Kez200 · 04/05/2019 07:29

Just bad luck. I dont agree with it bit it seems the way of the modern world to not follow first come first served etiquette in car parks anyway and full car parks are just a free for all and sometimes win, sometimes lose. Given that and size of spaces nowadays, I hate car parks!

englishdictionary · 04/05/2019 07:49

I would have just driven round to space B 🤷🏻‍♀️

The time it took you arguing you cost you another 20 mins in the end.

I may have driven through, sometimes I do sometimes I don't (usually I reverse in anyway though), I definitely wouldn't have considered what you were doing stopped where you were when making my judgement though.

One of those things maybe?

heartknot · 04/05/2019 08:57

He was a twat. People with 4x4's need to learn how to drive them and not use them as an excuse for bad behaviour. You were obviously waiting and he queue jumped!

ForalltheSaints · 04/05/2019 10:22

He is driving a 4x4 and I assume not in the hills somewhere. So by definition he is unreasonable.

I wish a 4x4 required a separate driving test, as most people faced with that or a smaller car I suspect would never want to take their test again.

DrFoxtrot · 04/05/2019 11:31

YANBU OP he must have realised you were waiting where you were for space A Angry

DrFoxtrot · 04/05/2019 11:33

Just realised this isn't AIBU Blush but it still applies Grin.

FiremanKing · 04/05/2019 11:55

No one has first dibs on a public car park space. It’s first come, first served and he beat you to it.

Frouby · 04/05/2019 12:00

Errr I drive a big 4 x 4, a pickup truck actually forallthesaints. I can park and reverse it perfectly fine, use it sometimes for a valid purpose (horsebox, using the pickup bit to pickup stuff that wouldn't go in a normal boot, offroading). But sometimes use it.for the school run, tesco shop or anywhere else I need to go.

Op he was a bit of a twat. Hope his next shit is hedgehog texture and put it behind you.

ForalltheSaints · 04/05/2019 12:12

A 4x4 with a horse box- a valid reason for having one. So that's 1% of those who have 4x4s, then perhaps another 2 or 3% for building/construction work. So over 90% of 4x4s are not really needed.
