Does Scotland have a May half term?

Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm struggling to find an exact answer online... does Scotland have a May half term break? It doesn't look like it? (I'm planning a trip in late May and looking to avoid school hols)

When did In-service days become INSET days?
Is that a regional thing?

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 28/04/2019 08:47

We still call them 'In service' days here in Fife.

dementedpixie · 28/04/2019 08:55

I've always called them in-service days too

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 28/04/2019 09:01

I’m a teacher and the language has certainly changed - I always call them in service days when talking but will say INSET when writing as that’s what my school calls them. I still call a probationer a probationer but everyone calls them NQTs now. I will never call my October holidays a half term because it just isn’t. It’s the end of a whole term. And the few days in Feb are mid term

And that wee bite to eat at playtime - not break- is a play piece not a snack. Smile

Apparently the Easter holidays are henceforth to be called 'Spring Break'.

I'm not religious and I do get why the change, but it's tricky to change the words you've always used.

dementedpixie · 28/04/2019 09:09

Its the October week and September weekend holidays. I suppose it's spring break as it won't always include Easter in the 2 weeks (like this year in my area)

Starryskiesinthesky · 28/04/2019 14:24

@loopygremlin that's lucky you told me that so I can be off for my children!

JudgeRindersMinder · 28/04/2019 14:27

The October holidays where I am are still the tatie holidays despite no tattie howking for years 😁

dementedpixie · 28/04/2019 14:28

These are Edinburgh holidays, :

Monday 6 May 2019, May Day
Tuesday 7 May 2019, staff only in service day
Monday 20May 2019, Victoria Day

dementedpixie · 28/04/2019 14:29

And I think some places in Scotland get 2 weeks in October whereas we only get 1 week here

FannyFeatures · 28/04/2019 14:29

Same as JudgeRinder, we don't get September weekend but do have 2 weeks for the tattoo holidays in October.

Likethebattle · 28/04/2019 14:40

No and we took a break last year up to the highlands thinking it would be quiet but it was packed with English families with kids on half term. I was surprised by how many kids there were.

No problem @Starryskiesinthesky
