When do children generally stop napping?

My DS is still constantly napping, he's back up to 3 naps a day after briefly going down to just 2 naps for a month or so.

I feel like I'll rarely see him if this carries on (I work part time but studying soon too).

When do they generally just stop sleeping in the day? Or when did you notice a decline in their naps?

Thank you!

Mine has always loved his sleep - totally full on between naps though! He was still having 2 hours in the afternoon between 3 and 4 yr old as I remember them sleeping on mats at nursery and he had to have one next to the wall as he'd still be asleep when the others were all running around.
At 12 he still needs 10 or 11 hours sleep

It sounds like he's having 15 hours sleep in 24?
Given the average for that age is 14 it's not really excessive.

Reading about the babies who loved sleep that turned into older children that still love sleep brings me joy! I live in fear of DS deciding he doesn't like sleep anymore! I love nap time!

Mine still naps for two hours plus at 3 years old. Sleeps a solid 11 hours at night too. He's in a better mood when he naps. His sister on the other hand has short naps during the day and goes to sleep at 7.30 and is up at 6 without fail. I wish she napped longer!

I’m 40 and I still enjoy a nap in the afternoon. Was always exhausted being at work all day!

kaytee87 · 02/04/2019 14:46

Should have said my 2.5yo is having 13 or 14 hours in 24.

Sounds like you have a sleepy child OP. I was like this. I cried when I started school because they wouldn't let me nap! I'd imagine yours will be later than the usually 2/3.

My DD is nearly 18 months. She naps for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours usually. One nap around 1pm after we pick up her brother from nursery.

At night she’s not the best sleeper, but on average she goes to bed at 7 and wakes for the day between 6 and 7 (just with some night waking thrown in too several nights a week)

My DS dropped his nap about 2.5. It was a fairly drawn out process though from around age 2 where he’d nap maybe every other day. He was a pain to get to bed though on nap days, and non nap days he went down at 6pm like a dream and slept til 7am. Nap days he was still up at 8 or 9pm

Lost Me too.

DS has been like this from birth, really. Except he slept more during the day. But I was incredibly lucky as I was blessed to have a baby that slept through from birth.

I was on the postnatal ward almost chucking to myself how I'd got so lucky when all the crying babies were around us. I was very jammy indeed, didn't have to attend to any of those cries Grin

It's only now at his age that I was slightly worried he might have something wrong if he's always sleeping like this.

But I think this thread has reassured me a lot.

I'll mention it to my GP in passing when I see her though

Do you go out in the day?

Faster · 02/04/2019 16:29

My DS is 21mo and he has two hours in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. He will sleep in his pram if we’re out and he’s awful if he doesn’t get enough nap time, he’s been like this since he was little.
It’s just his normal for him, hadn’t thought about worrying about it.

eclipse1808 · 02/04/2019 17:02

DS is 20 months so only a little older and he just has one nap now, but he’s gone without when we’ve been out for the day and been ok just a little angry at bedtime those days! He sleeps through the night 8-7/8ish and then has an early lunch at 11.45 and naps after that for around 1.5-2 hours. Very rarely longer than that.

Up until about 15 months he had a morning nap and afternoon nap. I’m hoping to stop his nap all together soon as I know he won’t sleep at nursery and he’ll be going there 4 days a week soon!
