Why do cats eat house plants ? Does anyone know ?

Our cat, many years ago, could often be seen munching on the leaves of our various spider plants. Do certain plants provide particular nutritional requirements for cats, a bit like long grass, or are some cats just slightly barmy ?

Helps purge themselves of fur balls by sicking up grass/plants.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/03/2019 18:03

Because plants are too heavy to knock off the surface?

As Palominoo said, cats like to eat grass which makes them vomit up hair balls. Gross but necessary.

The only answer I have for that is..... because cats are dicks! The nicer the pot plant the more they want to chomp on it (may just be my fleabags though Grin)

I suspected it might be out of feline necessity rather than plain arrogance, i.e I am a cat and I shall eat what I like. As I recall, our cat didn't bother with the rubber plants or the Swiss cheese plants, just the spider.

Mine eats them too, the edges of all my plants are frayed. And she has recently started on my rubber plant, as pp said she never had but last few weeks she is taking big chunks out of it. Drives me demented.

Because they're twats and they can.

Bringbackthestripes · 29/03/2019 19:09

Are the plant eating cats house cats? Or do they go out and can eat grass but just chomp on your plants anyway?

IndigoSpritz · 30/03/2019 04:59

Ours was both indoor and outdoor so had no excuse.

TreacherousCat can sniff a tulip out at fifty paces.
He's actually very elderly and normally only ventures downstairs for essential business (scowling at visitors or checking up on DH the kitchen staff) Put a vase of tulips on the window sill however and he's there in a flash
