Does anyone else write posts and then delete?

Thisisthelaststraw · 21/02/2019 19:20

I’ve been here on and off since 2006 but my confidence to post has never improved.

I find myself writing a reply, re reading to review it then thinking “no, no, you’re a gobshite. People will tut or laugh or argue with you etc” so I delete and just read other comments.

I’ve wanted to post a few threads too but always delete when I’ve composed them as I’m sure I just come across as an idiot.

In rl I’m riddled with anxiety but I can be full of banter and witty retorts and genuinely make people laugh or listen to my point of view but on MN I get the jitters! Grin

I kill threads all over the place too.

So am I just a weirdo with zero confidence or do other normally articulate and confident people shy away from commenting too?

I've done this for the very mundane reason that it's all taking too long to type and I've got to start the cooking or something. Or I lose interest in what I'm writing, so who the hell is going to be interested in reading it?

(Wish I'd zapped some of mine last night though, even though the blatant troll DM fodder thread has now gone).

ThunderStorms · 21/02/2019 22:54

I’ve learnt a lot by NOT deleting.

I understand people a little more now. Things I thought were innocent, I now see can be taken badly etc. Things a thought were common knowledge weren’t. Things I thought others would think boring aren’t... and so on... I know it’s a bubble on here, but I’d rather test the waters here than in real life Grin

Dreamzcancometrue · 21/02/2019 23:02

No one cares what I got to say anyway. So I mainly lurk and pinch other peoples solutions esp if I find a thread which is relatable.
If I choose to post, l rarely if ever delete.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 21/02/2019 23:05

Sometimes I just can't be arsed finishing what I'm typing Grin

IWantChocolates · 21/02/2019 23:30

Exactly the same as Frlrlrubert - someone else will have made the same point but better and I wonder why anyone would want to read my reply.

I also kill threads. I do that a lot turn delete them from my 'watched' so they don't sit there as a reminder of my loserness! Grin

DontCallMeCharlotte · 21/02/2019 23:51

All the time. Usually because I've done that thing where I've gone 'oh, I had a situation like that' and written all about it and then though, 'nah, nobody cares, someone already made my point but shorter and better'.

This.

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 22/02/2019 00:37

What you all said, but PARTICULARLY the writing too much thing.

I cringe at how long some of my posts are (mostly under different usernames). And it makes me invisible... I say things in posts, and then a more succinct writer comes along and other PPs quote them not me, even though I said the exact same thing first!

And I often write posts when I'm drunk, but then the "are you mad!" gene kicks in, and I don't post.
And sometimes it doesn't and I have to write snivelling requests to MNHQ to ask them to delete on my behalf!

Graphista · 22/02/2019 02:29

Aaaaaallllllll the time 😂

Reasons I delete:

It'd get deleted and maybe get me banned (there are certain types of posters I'm really starting to get fed up repeatedly seeing posting on mn. But I'm just avoiding those threads now, unfortunately can't hide as they crop up in various sections)

So also - OP'S a twat and won't pay attention anyway

(When you can already see a threads going

Op Aibu?

Mn yes!!

Op no I'm not and you're all horrible and don't know what you're talking about)

Someone else has already said it better I'm not offering anything new

I'm about to ask mn something either common sense or googling will answer so I do that instead

"Tbh, some posters could definitely do with pressing delete a bit more often!" Also true! There's some shocking victim blaming misogynistic or otherwise bigoted or nasty crap posted on mn at times.

"Am in awe of others who say the right things in few words." Me too!

I've had a few posters recently tell me my posts are too long and sometimes they're so long (I write in my notes app then copy and paste over, so I can respond to pps as well as ops and supposedly think before I post) that they can't be posted in one post (basically bloody great essays!)

So I'm trying to rein myself in, it happens most on subjects I'm passionate about and feel deeply personally affected by.

Some lovely posters though said to the critics that they liked my posts. One said they never read my posts are they're too long and someone said they were missing out which I was hugely flattered by.

I'm an English grad & closet/wannabe novelist so I'm used to writing a lot - we had editing exercises too though and I was absolutely dreadful at them! They were the assignments I got the worst marks for 😂

ClusterFukt · 22/02/2019 02:30

I’m just lazy, start write stuff and get halfwa

sparkling123 · 22/02/2019 02:35

I do this all the time, mainly if what I'm saying is the same as everyone else's reply. I usually think 'why am I wasting my time, no one wants to hear my idle thoughts'.... very nearly deleted this but stopped myself Grin

VetOnCall · 22/02/2019 04:06

Yes, all the time! I type out a response and then chicken out of posting or realise that my point has already been made, often more succinctly. I've also killed a few threads so sorry if I do the same to this one 😄

Scissor · 22/02/2019 04:12

Proper thread killer here.. Used to post lots a few years back. Still recovering.

MrsSiba · 22/02/2019 04:39

I feel like I kill threads too so will type something out then delete it. Sometimes I make it too personal and think hang on, this thread is not about me then try to ask specific questions or leave a more general comment.

A couple of threads I started did get good responses, even went to a second page on the app 🙌 It was a proud moment 😂

Kittycuddles · 22/02/2019 04:43

100% thread killer here, v v depressing on my behalf!! GrinGrin

HeronLanyon · 22/02/2019 04:44

I sometimes kill threads. I was once told ‘well that’s told us’ and whAt has been ‘lively’ discussion went silent. That memory makes me rethink my time sometimes and I delete instead of writing something anodyne. Hope I am assisting your recovery scissors by replying. Grin

HeronLanyon · 22/02/2019 04:45

Tone not time.

Catren · 22/02/2019 05:16

I did it earlier today. Menial shite about dh. Read it back and realised iwbu so apologised to him and all is well. Sometimes it's useful just to get it all out!

Decormad38 · 22/02/2019 05:52

Only on Facebook. I start to write a comment then think..no people will think your a twat.

TrainSong · 22/02/2019 06:03

No! I wish I did. I type and post without checking, then see my posts, so full of typos they are incoherent, and they embarass me.

RedWineIsFabulous · 22/02/2019 06:06

Yes me too. Especially lately on the Jihadi bride threads. Some of the comments that are on there make me just incredulous. I write a long reply then delete half the time. As I know I would get banned in my response.

RunSweatLaughAndLatte · 22/02/2019 07:43

Yes. I do this a lot on Facebook as well!

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 22/02/2019 07:47

Yes! Sometimes I stop and think what am I gaining/contributing from writing this post?

Sometimes I 'let rip' and know that my response is OTT or unnecessarily unpleasant and that I'm only writing it to vent my own anger that I am experiencing about something else in my life. Writing it and deleting it is cathartic.

BeckyButterworth · 23/02/2019 02:28

This is very interesting as several of you on here are posters that I remember that I enjoy reading, like Graphista and HeronLanyon for example.

I have now read this over about five times and kept considering deleting, but it the spirit of the thread I shall post and be damned Grin

And have prob killed the thread...

Angryanxiety · 23/02/2019 02:59

Dw @Becky no one even acknowledged my post ;)

BeckyButterworth · 23/02/2019 03:17

@Angryanxiety Normally I ignore these kinds of posts, but as you addressed me personally...

I read your OP, and you had responses, and then I believe a full deletion. Angry posts directed at vulnerable persons with a view to goading MN posters are unacceptable. HTH
