The end of the film Pretty Woman....

I'm trying to imagine how it was 5-10 years later. Grin

I bloody hate the film, so my imagined follow up is probably a very cynical one.

Frau I hope in one Sliding Doors universe, she and her freaking adorable Irish mate, Anna get together and live happily ever after and raise Golden Retrievers somewhere in Hampshire.

IamFrauBlucher · 01/02/2019 23:45

Another in agreement that Baby and Johnny wouldn't make it.

I was half watching The Wedding Date earlier and think there's another two that wouldn't have made it to a successful sequel.

He'd struggle to find work after being an escort with an otherwise empty CV, and she'd get fed up of women constantly stopping them in the street and reminding her that he'd knobbed half of New York.

Funnily enough, I see Debra Messing's character in the Wedding Date doing exactly as you stated above and then ending up exactly as Debra Messing's character in Will and Grace. Only difference being that she obviously would just have taken Will to the wedding in the first place!

Dirty dancing;.Johnny ends up teaching dirty at a hotel in Cuba (dirty dancing 2:Havana nights) and baby goes to college and ends up married some boring middle class professional and baby wistfully daydreams about Johnny and he becomes the 'well one summer" story she tells to all the other stepford wives during their get togethers.

IamFrauBlucher · 02/02/2019 11:24

teapot - do you think she'll make an attempt to get to Cuba on a girls holiday to relive the days she learnt to dance and meet up with him again?

RE: sliding doors there's a theory in physics that ours is one of an infinite number of parallel universe which differ from each other in one key way. I think the film just shows us two of those. Some versions of her live happily ever after and some do not but all are equally true.

ReaganSomerset · 02/02/2019 13:04

Universes, not universe.

PoutySprout · 02/02/2019 13:16

There’s a theory in physics that ours is one of an infinite number of parallel universe which differ from each other in one key way.

I have several scientist friends attempting to find the parallel universe where Remain won and get us to it. Wink

IamFrauBlucher · 02/02/2019 17:11

So in essence Sliding Doors could just continue on Netflix ad infinitum? Shock

If someone wanted it to, yes. Can't see why anyone would though. There'd never be any character progression and the story would keep changing.

I've said on here before I'd love to be able to write a script for pretty woman 2 but that they've left it too late really. Because I'd have done it as a role reversal, vivienne taking Edward to her home town to meet her mother (played by grace zabriskie who was the mum in officer & gentleman or else Shirley MacLaine) the mum being acerbic and suspicious initially as are viviennes's friends including a guy who's held a torch for her but Edward wins them over - because what's often forgotten is he's rich now - but he came from poor! These ARE his people and he would hold his own - end with the wedding

Dirty dancing I think they'd have set up a dance school with the cheque her dad DIDN'T give to Robbie in the end. Johnny focuses on dance but the school is in a rough-Ish neighbourhood and baby who's a qualified social worker helps the disadvantaged kids find routes out of their poverty via not just dance but education and self confidence.

Top gun 2 is being made now and bloody Jennifer connolly who I can't stand is the love interest! Presumably kelly mcgillis no longer considered attractive enough. I kinda hope Maverick is a widow rather than a fickle piece of shit though.

Re sliding doors - I hope that the physicists are right and somewhere my first baby that I miscarried is alive and happy, they'd be almost 30 now.

There'd need to be a 3rd parallel universe though where my first mc happened and my 2nd didn't because if the first hadn't happened my ex wouldn't have looked twice at me, indeed I probably wouldn't have been out clubbing that night as I'd have been home with my then toddler and probably their father too. (We split before I knew I was pregnant, I mc before I got up the guts to tell him. And after it just felt "wrong" somehow. We got back in touch many years later just as friends and I told him then. He sympathised and said if I hadn't mc and had told him he'd have been there for baby & I - we'd split due to circumstances/distance rather than problems in the relationship)

I had another sliding doors situation around my wedding and that guy too. Given how the marriage turned out can't help but wonder...

Anyway, back to the thread...

Back to the future - doc we need the time machine! Indefinitely! We can sort out all the way back to Thatcherism never mind brexit!

I watched a film years ago, can't remember the name but basically the premise was "if you could kill hitler/Stalin/hoh chi Minh etc as children - knowing what you do about what they'd go on to do - would you?" And they put it into practise with dinner guests? Bugging me now if anyone can help. Last supper? Yep

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TheLasttSupper(19955film)

The perpetually changing nature of an ongoing series of sliding doors moments is a bit the opposite to Groundhog Day...

... except it's not. Because bill Murrays character HAS to change small incidents to eventually get the "right" result

IamFrauBlucher · 03/02/2019 01:27

@Graphista Thanks sorry for the losses you've experienced.

The Last Supper - where they kept growing tomatoes over the buried bodies? Great film.

I like Cameron Diaz in those darker comedies. There was one IIRC where she was a bridezilla to a guy who goes on a stag weekend where a guy accidentally kills a prostitute on a wall hook and they have to cover it up and get rid of the body.

Like s much darker preHangover.
