What a shame, I enjoyed his appearances on the news quiz, I didn’t realise he was ill, and only 57Sad

RIP:

This has made me so sad. He was so astute, getting across such valid points with humour. There are very few of his type now.. His rants and rages in the early days of the News Quiz was just the best radio ever.

groundcontroltomontydon · 01/02/2019 12:51

Have just seen this. So sad. Absolutely loved him on the News Quiz, rib-achingly funny. RIP.

Ursaminor · 01/02/2019 13:40

Am so, so sad.
Loved him on the radio, and in the early days at the Edinburgh Fringe. He was only 57 - no age at all

CormoranStrike · 01/02/2019 13:41

I am so sorry to read this.

A funny, intelligent and principled man.

SweetLathyrus · 01/02/2019 13:45

We saw him live several times. The last time not much more than a year ago, we took my 15 year old son (as part of his political eduction). We sat in the front row (it was row B so we hadn't expected it!), and he spotted DS who was the youngest there by at least 25 years, and chatted to him from the stage. I pleased to say that as pol. ed. goes, it seems to have worked.

Yes, FUCK cancer.

Molakai · 01/02/2019 13:47

So so sad.
I also immediately thought of his fabulous tribute to Linda Smith. Both favourite voices for me and he too will be very much missed. Sad

TheSconeOfStone · 01/02/2019 14:00

Cancer seems to be everywhere at the moment. Lost my dad in the Summer, aunt has terminal cancer. Parents of friends gone and going.

I had no idea he was ill and this has really upset me today. Loved hearing him on R4.

Iwantacampervan · 01/02/2019 18:47

Great tributes today on the radio especially before the 'News Quiz' which I am listening to now. Purely coincidental but Linda Smith has just had a mention.I haven't yet listened to 'Last Word' broadcast this afternoon.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 01/02/2019 19:10

He was always my favourite on News Quiz and ISIHAC. Really funny and had principles.

Obituary from his friend Mark Steel.

Upwiththisiwillnotput · 01/02/2019 20:52

Thank you for that Laurel, it’s just made me tearful. I’m a huge fan of Mark Steel too.
DH did some work for Jeremy a couple of years ago, lovely man. What a loss.

BigStripeyBastard · 01/02/2019 22:15

Hugely sad news. I really did enjoy listening to him on The News Quiz and ISIHAC.
Always seemed a genuinely warm, witty chap. And very, very funny.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/02/2019 10:32

My best memory of The News Quiz is one time that Jeremy went off on one of his rants and had the audience and panel in stitches until eventually Sandi said through fits of laughter "Jeremy, Jeremy, you have to stop ... because I can't breathe". Grin

I liked that he never compromised in order to get a laugh, he said what he really thought and made that funny.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/02/2019 11:01

That's the one Saturday, so funny!

Moussemoose · 02/02/2019 12:59

Just listened to the News quiz.

I'm snivelling nowSad

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/02/2019 13:56

Yes, it was a good thing that they recorded on Thursday night as it would have been so hard for them after hearing about Jeremy. Miles Jupp sounded as though he was barely holding it together in the bits he recorded yesterday. Sad

GiantKitten · 02/02/2019 22:48

I caught Miles’s tribute on catchup this afternoon. Sincere and very moving. We will miss him enough as listeners, imagine having known him as a friend Sad
