Just namechanged in case this outs me...

DD yesterday: You known those people from school who went to live in Ukulele?
Me: Confused what?
DD: You know, they were at our school, but they moved to Ukulele!
Me: But Ukulele isn't a place... what do you mean?

...much more of the same ensues... then the penny drops...

Me: Oh! Do you mean the people who went to live in Qatar?
DD: (with "dur mum" voice) yes mum, them!

:o

Oh I see - not quite guitar Grin

My brother did a similar one when about five - his friend was called Van he was sure, but it wasn’t. He meant Laurie Grin

I think she actually thought I was talking about a place called Guitar. Or Ukulele as she then remembered it.

My mum is a teacher and once had a parent approach her and say that her son had been really upset the night before. She said it was a bit awkward but apparently my mum had called her son an apple and she just wanted to find out what had happened.

Mum didn't know what she meant but told her she'd think about what might have happened - and that she categorically had not called her son an apple!

Eventually it dawned on her (after chatting with the child) that she'd walked past him the day before playing with another child and she'd said "ooh, look at you pair." The poor boy had got pair mixed up with pear and thought mum was calling him a fruit but by the time he got home he'd obviously forgotten which fruit it was.

Aged about 12, one of my friends had come to stay with us over the Easter holidays. Mum and I frequently used to go to the enormous Common at the end of our road to take the dogs for a walk and collect a couple of buckets of manure, left by the horse riders, for Dad's rose beds, so friend came with us during her stay. Apparently she wrote a postcard to her parents saying "... and one afternoon we went Manua hunting on the Common". Her parents were quite perplexed and assumed that a 'Manua' must be some kind of exotic orchid - until explained otherwise at a later date!
