I offered something for free but now....

So I offered a stereo system for free on a couple of Facebook groups -
I chose a couple because whenever I’ve sold or offered things before (mainly children’s clothes) I’ve not had many responses.
However, I’ve had so many responses about this!
Originally I thought that as we didn’t use it any more and things have moved on nobody would really want it. But now I see a lot of people do and I wonder if I should actually try and sell it, just for a small amount.
FWIW we are fortunate enough not to be really struggling for money but certainly not in a position to not be bothered about it either.
I would feel bad letting all the interested people down but also I now feel a bit like I am wasting money. DH is asking how I know someone isn’t going to get if for free and sell it.
So WWYD, please advise!

Tell everyone it's gone, and try & sell it (elsewhere).

HollowTalk · 20/01/2019 22:46

I'd sell it. Don't worry about those people - they know others will be in line for it, too.

LuckyLou7 · 20/01/2019 22:47

Tricky one. You'll be gutted if you give it away and then see it advertised for sale. Withdraw it, wait a week or so, then readvertise with a price attached.

sackrifice · 20/01/2019 22:47

In the time it took to write that you could have put it on ebay. If you think it will sell, sell it. If not, don't.

waxy1 · 20/01/2019 22:48

Don’t offer for free.

Put a low price on it. That discourages the total nutters from wasting your time.

Jamhandprints · 20/01/2019 22:50

I think if you give it away you accept the risk of someone taking it and selling it. You just let the item go and it's up to them what they do with it.
If you want to try and sell it then fine. Nobody will care that much. Nobody is in desperate need of a stereo. But you will have to use a different site otherwise it does look bad.

I stopped giving stuff away on Freecycle because a lot of dubious people were collecting things that were clearly going to be sold, e.g. an old woman who had never been married who took a car seat, the people who asked if the baby clothes bundle contained designer gear.

I would say it's gone, and quietly sell on eBay.

Thanks everyone.
I know *Sackrifice, it turned into a long old post!

I always put a price on things I am going to give away. If they seem nice and offer up the money I tell them it’s free. If they try bargaining me down or being difficult (I’ve only got £....) then they pay or go without!
