New jacket has a strong fishy smell!

I got DD a jacket from River Island for Xmas. It's faux leather with a faux fur trim collar. I live in Spain, so got it shipped here and when it arrived it had quite a strong fishy smell. I thought it would fade and wrapped it up and gave it to her.

It hasn't!!! I can't put it in the wardrobe because it makes the whole wardrobe smell of fish. I've tried hanging it out in the fresh air, spraying perfume and I finally washed it out of desperation. Luckily it came out of the wash ok, but the smell is still there!!! Anyone experience this before? Any ideas of how to get rid of the smell??

How odd. I'd be contacting river island and asking about shipping... could it have come in on a boat with a catchment of fish?.

I remember purchasing some leather boots once. They also smelt like fish. The smell did fade after a while. I had to air them out in the garden for a few weeks mind!

How strange!

I read somewhere it's a type of glue that gives stuff that smell.

DS's Hype backpack smelled like that when it arrived. I put it through a hot wash several times and it did go.

Agree with previous poster, that there's a type of glue that smells a bit fishy. It will fade,I assure you.

Good to know. I hope it fades soon or DD will out grow it 😂

I had a jacket that stank and after searching the web I found the solution and it worked! Scrunch up sheets of newspaper into balls and pack the inside of the jacket with them. Include the arms. Place the jacket in a bin liner and surround with scrunched up newspaper. Tie it up and put in a dark place for two weeks. The paper should absorb the smell. It worked for me, my jacket had a strong BO type smell when it was new and it totally went. Let us know how you get on x
