The Favourite - WTF did I just watch?

Spoilers ahead.

Has anyone seen this? I'm not sure what I was expecting but this film was plain weird.

The plot took ages to get going. It seemed sure stilted at times. I'm no prude but the use of the word cunt was pointlessly gratuitous. Like teenagers thinking it's cool and edgy.

The dancing was hilarious though.

I liked it!
I thought it was weird and funny. It's no historical romp that's for sure. It's MUCH less weird thanthe director's other outputs though

Proseccoagain · 12/01/2019 23:11

Loved it but thought I'd never seen anything like it before....wanted to see the young hussy get her comeuppance.

lemonface · 13/01/2019 19:08

Should I go and see it??

BartonHollow · 13/01/2019 19:12

Oh I loved it thought it was brilliant

Though if you're massively offended by the use of the word cunt, it's a no for you.

Jacksback · 13/01/2019 19:15

Had no idea what to expect , but brilliant .
Not your average period drama lol
Go and see it

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 13/01/2019 19:18

That’s what I was thinking. If you’ve seen The Lobster then this film is totally normal 😂. Just saw it today with DH and DDs. We all loved it. The acting is superb. Queen Anne has always fascinated me, and whilst this is by no means historically correct (time frame all out for a start) it was very enjoyable.

defectiveinspector · 13/01/2019 19:21

Go and see it. Olivia Coleman, Rachel Weiss and Emma Stone and fab. A film with three women as the main characters, some laugh out loud lines and the weirdest dancing you are ever likely to seeGrin What's not to like!

CakeBeTheFoodOfLove · 13/01/2019 19:25

I loved it too, excellent acting and interesting story.

Allice · 13/01/2019 19:27

I saw it, thought the acting was amazing but it was slightly too long.
Loved Nicholas Holt!

cafesociety · 13/01/2019 19:27

It was great. Superb performances from the main characters, especially Olivia, amazing costumes and a great story which I found easy enough to follow. All the scenes added to the feel of the film and the period it was set in, I was engrossed all the way through. Impressed.

BartonHollow · 13/01/2019 19:28

Yes Nicholas Hoult was a revelation in this

pontiouspilates · 13/01/2019 19:59

I loved it! Beautifully shot, great score and funny.

Harryo · 13/01/2019 20:01

I loved it! It made me want to learn more about Ann. I also wanted it to be longer.

Blueemeraldagain · 13/01/2019 20:04

It is a great surreal film with three amazing female main characters. The costumes were amazing.

It definitely character driven and not plot driven.

I thought Nicholas Hoult was good but possibly too young/looked too young for the role?

TheFaerieQueene · 13/01/2019 20:07

It’s a wonderful film.

hopeishere · 13/01/2019 20:11

It wasn't what I was expecting either. But I enjoyed it.

Agree it was a bit long.

DioneTheDiabolist · 13/01/2019 20:15

You watched scene after scene of historical poshos being cruel. And a couple of scenes of historical commoners being cruel.Grin

What's not to like?Confused

LuvMyBoyz · 13/01/2019 20:57

Took my Mum. I loved every minute and saw it as a historically inspired romp. She hated it be cause it was sweary and leary. But she agreed the costumes were lovely and Olivia Coleman was superb. We were both amazed by it for different reasons.

FuzzyShadowChatter · 13/01/2019 21:34

I made the "whaa?" gesture several times while watching the movie and I do feel the ending few minutes really did not help that at all. I quite enjoyed it, I thought it was a great experience, but there were many 'what am I watching?' moments. I also found afterwards the only way I could describe it without being spoilery was "like the trailer but weirder"

I thought Nicholas Hoult was good but possibly too young/looked too young for the role?

Yeah, he was great and I can see why they did it to visually make both sides seem more different, but historically the two leaders were similar ages. I watched a cheerful video from one my favourite youtubers that really helpfully explained the historical situation and differences as this is an area of British history I know very little about (as a non-Brit). It can be found here:

SaigonSaigon · 13/01/2019 21:48

Great performances, beautifully shot and enjoyable overall but I was disappointed with how it ended. It was too abrupt. It spoilt it for me.

Nothisispatrick · 13/01/2019 21:52

I loved it. I felt very sorry for Queen Anne.

BartonHollow · 13/01/2019 21:56

I thought the end was perfect

She is not Queen Anne's favourite and not does she want to be but they are both stuck with each other

Rowenaravenclawsdiadem · 13/01/2019 22:16

I fell asleep. Woke up for five mins and drifted off again. Had no idea what it was about.Blush

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/01/2019 22:22

I didn’t like it! I was expecting a comedy so didn’t get off to to a good start.

Didn’t mind the swearing, didn’t mind the sex, but the utter joylessness if it made me come out depressed.

We bumped into some friends who were watching it for the second time to see if they could work out what the fuck it was about Grin

thebabessavedme · 13/01/2019 22:27

cunt was a very normal expression for that period - i thought the film fantastic
