Now- a very important cracker question..

In my family of origin, you didn’t “win” at crackers. You knew which one was yours and got that hat and joke and “thing” even if it ended up in the other puller’s hand. Did/does anyone else do this? Dp and I have been debating this for the past 30 Christmasses! And I have been outnumbered ever since our children joined the win/lose team. But I still think my way is best. Anyone with me?

I didn't know winning a cracker existed until I was well into adulthood! We always just have whatever's in our own cracker.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 20/12/2018 17:00

It's game on in our family! That's the point surely? Although we let ds 4 win were not that bad lol

ScreamingValenta · 20/12/2018 17:02

If I win I'll always offer my cracker to the other person if I already have one.

averylongtimeago · 20/12/2018 17:07

We have cracker presents- chosen to suit the person. So my dgs is getting a plastic hen and chickens, dgd a unicorn key ring, DH socks cos he's a grinch, son in law - mini quiz game and so on.
We get cheap but pretty crackers and carefully place stuff the extras in side. Sometimes this is a challenge and lots of sellotape is needed.

greenpop21 · 20/12/2018 17:20

Whoever ends up with the big part wins the hat and crap etc. It's not a big deal OP. Everyone gets one!

ImportantWater · 20/12/2018 17:22

I also didn't know winning a cracker existed until I was an adult. It sounds ridiculously competitive and mean to me!

greenpop21 · 20/12/2018 17:23

It's really not water it's not serious it's just a joke!

greenpop21 · 20/12/2018 17:24

Once you've one a hat, if you win another, you give the contents to someone who hasn't. Then everyone eats and it's forgotten. Just a bit of fun people!!!!!!!

greenpop21 · 20/12/2018 17:24

won not one!

DustyMaiden · 20/12/2018 17:50

We have home made crackers with carefully chosen jokes. Presents that are wanted and scratch cards. There was only one year we weren’t in profit.

YouCanCallMeJodieWho · 20/12/2018 18:43

I'm in my fifties and this is the first time I've realised 'winning' is a thing with crackers. I've met some odd folk along the way who tried to snatch someone else's cracker and I had no idea what was going on.

Each person gets their own cracker and what's inside it. You can swap bits if you want.

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/12/2018 04:41

We are half and half in that if you "win" then its yours but if you win again then you pass it back to the other person.

Unless its Christmas Pant Head* in which case the cracker on your plate is the one that was specially created for you and therefore all cracker owners simply pull for the joy of the bang!

  • Dont ask....
Graphista · 21/12/2018 04:49

We did a mix of "winners" and "that's my cracker"

Ok now that's out the way - help me?

I want to know where I can find crackers that have the traditional really crappy gifts in - I'm especially looking for the fortune teller fish.

It's dds last Christmas as a "kid" and this is very much something she associates with being a kid and I thought it'd be fun and nostalgic.

OvO · 21/12/2018 04:49

Oh no, I don’t like the sound of winning at crackers! We’re definitely a keep what comes out of your own cracker family.

Of course theres swapping until everyone has a colour of hat they’re happy with and there’s trades of presents. But trading only works if everyone had something to start with!

Having cracker winners makes baby Jesus cry. 😔

Pinkprincess1978 · 21/12/2018 04:57

I'm with you op. W have always done it this way. What happens if people 'win' two crackers? Do they keep both?

My DH now makes his own crackers and what we fill them with is personal to that guest - plus are names are written on them with glitter so no question whose cracker is whose 😂

Barbeasty · 21/12/2018 05:23

RedForShort the fill your own crackers normally have just the hat and joke provided, although normally you have to put them in yourself.

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 21/12/2018 07:44

Red I found some in the pound shop with that game where you put a famous person’s name on your forehead and everyone has to guess who they are (and hat and joke)

RedForShort · 21/12/2018 08:49

Two good ideas. Thanks. Though the pound shop is slightly more appealing due to not involving my having to assemble anything!!

DarlingNikita · 21/12/2018 09:56

I've never, EVER heard of everyone having a designated or guaranteed cracker. It was the law of the jungle in our house.

Having said that, you could always prevail upon a winner to give you their hat/joke or a go of their spinning top. We weren't TOTAL savages.

morningconstitutional2017 · 21/12/2018 10:03

We share them out after most of us have won so that everyone has a crown and a gift. The less enthusiastic lose the crown quite quickly.

Apparently the 'puller' who gets their end of the cracker nearest to the floor is more likely to win (not infallible) so BIL and I (both very competitive) were nearly doing the limbo trying to win ours.

Do tell Pyongyang about the Christmas panthead - I need a good laugh.

Neolara · 21/12/2018 13:43

I consider it a win if I can not end up wearing a stupid paper hat.

ImportantWater · 21/12/2018 17:30

Graphista I am pretty sure Wilkinsons have fortune telling fish in the crackers
