... is it?! I had no idea Hmm

She just told me off for wrapping presents with sticky tape and that I should be using just ribbon to hold the paper in place. I was a bit flummoxed as to how to respond.

Tell me, is this a thing?!
And why?!?

Oh for god's sake! - who cares!!??

I would not give her a present at all frankly!

Mookatron · 18/12/2018 14:28

DH thinks this. But you can tell your MIL ribbon is common, he uses string (but would never say common as that's common).

Blessingsdragon1 · 18/12/2018 14:29

Hides box tape I use as it's all I've got in 😂

Not in my house. This time of year, a roll of sellotape is rarer than hen’s teeth. Smile

Bowchicawowow · 18/12/2018 14:30

What? How can sellotape be common?

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 18/12/2018 14:30

The Queen uses sellotape so there.

ElainaElephant · 18/12/2018 14:30

Oh my. Even the people I know that do the fancy wrapping thing and make parcels look beautiful use tape! (double sided sometimes, so it's hidden, but tape nonetheless)

Your mil can do it her way, but needs to let you do it yours.

IncomingCannonFire · 18/12/2018 14:30

She been on the sherry while watching Kirstys Handmade Christmas again?
It is very common for people to use the modern invention of sellotape to hold gift wrap together. Less common to use just ribbon al la victorian era England. Hmm
I personally wrap all my presents in gold leaf with a diamond topper.

GooodMythicalMorning · 18/12/2018 14:31

Tape is normal, ribbon is normal, string is (a little boring) but normal. There is no right or wrong just use what you like.

Diorissimo1985 · 18/12/2018 14:31

Mookatron common was my word Blush
MIL just asked "must you use all that ghastly plastic tape again? It's not smart"

Diorissimo1985 · 18/12/2018 14:33

She uses that raffia (?) sort of twiney ribbon

RandomWok · 18/12/2018 14:34

What...? No cellotape?!?! That is madness! How do you even do that? I'd end up in a right old mess!

Mookatron · 18/12/2018 14:34

I enjoy using as much tape as possible, and as noisily as possible so I look as common as possible when wrapping my presents (only when I'm with DH otherwise I do it normally). I married up. Common people are the best.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 18/12/2018 14:36

I'd love to meet your MIL!! If only tone get a glimpse into the life of someone who doesn't use sellotape. Can you give us any more insights??

MrsJayy · 18/12/2018 14:38

Goodness me just when you think you have read everything poncey about Christmas comes along she is clearly bonkers although I have a friend who has a wrapping station Xmas Hmm her spare room she uses double sided tape though. How does your mil deal with gift bags because that is what I would do with her gifts.

Loyaultemelie · 18/12/2018 14:40

I decided this year to go eco friendly and wrap my presents in fabric. Stupidly I hadn't realised that sellotape wouldn't stick to fabric. After much swearing head scratching I discovered garden string worked a treat. Dh was scandalised as "you can't wrap presents in string" Little does he know his are wrapped in newspaper and string because they were too big for fabric scraps

MrsJayy · 18/12/2018 14:40

I found 3 rolls of tape when I was putting the 2 rolls I just bought away yesterday so i have tonnes

MadameDuBarry · 18/12/2018 14:42

I wrap my presents in beaten gold and stick the edges together with unicorn tears.

Diorissimo1985 · 18/12/2018 14:42

MrsJayy hmm not sure about gift bags, I don't know if one has ever crossed her threshold. I imagine those are common too.

Contemplating asking postman to intercept her present from us as it's COVERED in sellotape... sadly, I sent it before today's revelation.

Dimsumlosesum · 18/12/2018 14:43

In that case after her quote she probably means ghastly for the environment, not "common.

Mookatron · 18/12/2018 14:44

'It's not smart' = common.

BiddyPop · 18/12/2018 14:44

You can probably use very little tape, just a few tiny bits to hold it together enough for you to put the ribbon or string around it.

But not use tape at all?!

Batshit!!

(Ooops sorry, just realised that was a different MIL thread)...

FreshEyre · 18/12/2018 14:45

Good luck trying to wrap DC's present with standard size wrapping paper and fancy twine stuff...

MIL just told me sellotape is common...
Diorissimo1985 · 18/12/2018 14:45

Yeah, I've known her ten years, I know what she meant... Grin
