Apple watches

I'm way behind with Xmas shopping so am getting a bit desperate! DS2 (22) thinks he'd like an Apple Watch. I know nothing about them. Can anyone tell me if they are any good? Is there much difference between series 3 and series 4? Confused

I looked into getting one but after deciding what I wanted to use it for I decided a fit bit is better. I went for the Blaize as it was most like the apple but I've seen a newer version looks even more like it (can't remember what that one was called though).

This is what a GPS only one can do without your iPhone present

I really love mine, I got it as an extra to my health insurance. I wasn’t sure how much I’d like it but it’s fantastic, I find it really useful.

My favourite feature is the one that allows you to beep your iPhone so that I can find it- I’m always loosing it around the house. I also like answering calls on it, like the activity trackers etc. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how much I like mine.

Who needs Google with you lovely helpful people!

Was hoping to surprise ds, but think I may have to sound him out a bit over exactly what he wants.

Thanks again.

Probably best to sound him out as there is size and colour to take into consideration also

I had to sound out my DS(26) as I am getting him a refurbished iPhone SE and there are different variations of them and I didn't want to make a costly and disappointing error.

I got a 3 when the 4 first came out. I charge it every other day. It's the gadget you never knew you needed until you get one!!

Pardon the Christmas name change, it's really MissConductUS.

I've decided that I am going to treat myself to one of these watches. I decided to go with the series 4, just GPS, space gray with a sports band. I concluded that for me, the series 4 was worth the extra money, mostly based on this review

Apple Watch series 4 battery test in fitness tracking

which said that when hiking and running the 4 was much easier to read due to the larger screen and that the battery lasted much longer. She wore a series 4 on one wrist and a series 3 on her other wrist for a six hour hike and run.

This review was very helpful too.

The price difference is a bit less here in the US because you pay the same number of GBP's as we pay in USD and the dollar is worth less.

So I've ordered it from the apple website for pickup at my nearest Apple store, which is in a very posh shopping mall about 20 miles away. I'll go and pick it up at 9:00 when they open. DH thinks I've lost my mind to go anywhere near that mall, which will be mobbed with people Christmas shopping. Hopefully I'll survive. Xmas Smile

Thanks to all who shared their personal experiences with the watch. DH and I really just do practical presents for each other, so it will be nice to have something fun for myself this year.

YankOnTheShelf · 15/12/2018 10:31

Since I jumped onto this thread saying that DH wants one of these I'll just mention that he's decided he'd rather upgrade his phone to an XR, which he's going to sort himself. So I am not a Grinch Xmas Smile.

If you want the cellular one, your iPhone needs to be with EE as they’re currently the only network that does it.

I have the S3 with no cellular and tbh it’s more than adaquete as I’m almost always in places with WiFi.

tinstar · 16/12/2018 10:33

He's with H3G and tied into a contract so I guess that rules out the cellular one.

I'm now on day 3 with the series 4 watch and have it about 80% figured out. It's amazing how much functionality they've given it, particularly in the fitness and activity tracking. My cellular carrier supports them but I don't see the extra cost being worth it.

I do recommend getting Applecare Plus for it. It's worth it for the great technical support and the walk in service at the Apple Store. Year ago I had an iPhone with Applecare Plus and after a year and a half the battery started to bulge and push the screen a bit out of the frame. I took it into the store and they took one look at it and handed me a new phone.
