So a drunken night resulted in this idea...

We've thought

Babycham/snowballs
Vodka martinis with an olive
Starter
Fondue
Cheese and pineapple hedgehog
Devils on horseback
Main
Coq au vin? A really yellow curry? What about vegetarian? Were there any of those in the 70s🤣??
Dessert
Black Forest gateau
Something else?

Any more ideas welcome.

@Rudgie47
Are you sure chicken in a basket was the 1970s @80sMum? We had nothing as sophisticated as that in our house

Definitely! It was never served at home though, only in pubs. I worked in a pub kitchen in the summer of 1975. Chicken in a basket was the in thing. I don't recall any other main course being on offer (though that could be a memory fail on my part!).

It wasn't long, though, before the exciting addition of "scampi in a basket" arrived!

Definitely the 70s. I know we were served it (and scampi in the basket) in a reastaurant during the heatwave summer of 76. It may have been around long before then but it was certainly a thing in the seventies.

Yes I remember thinking chicken in a basket was amazing when I was 7 or 8 (1970’s)

MillicentBeauchamp · 08/12/2018 19:11

It was when we were on holiday and went to a pub

Deathraystare · 09/12/2018 11:57

Prawn cocktail or vol au vents?

Yum! Although according to St Mary of the Berry, Prawn Cocktail was a 60's number. She is bringing it back along with quiche. Ok know they never really went away!

Miss mum's vol au vents!

Thanks for all inputs. Final menu is as follows:-

Cocktails and canapés
Cheese and pineapple hedgehog
Twiglets
Silverskin onions
Snowballs
Babycham
Vodka martinis with olive

Starter
Glass of orange juice (doily and saucer, natch)
Cheese fondue

Main
Beef or mushroom stroganoff
Rice
A fancy French baguette like we had on holiday
Mateus Rose

Dessert
Black Forest gateau
Butterscotch Angel Delight

After eights and g and t

I shall be wearing a natty horizontally striped tunic over some black jersey flares. Probably accessorised with a pinny while cooking and perhaps a cigarette holder.
