Husband has won a ham. I have questions.

He has come home from his monthly golf game with a fucking enormous ham. It's a 'cooked on the bone ham' and seems to be cured or salted or whatever. It's sealed (vacuum packed) and has a shop sticker on it. No 'use by' or 'eat by' date though. I've shoved it in the fridge. It barely fits.

Will it last until Christmas? I've got people descending so it would come in handy.

How about if I keep it sealed, and then glaze and bake it for Christmas?

Is it like pork, in that I'm likely to kill everyone if I risk it?

Put it straight into the fr~zer

BillywilliamV · 02/12/2018 03:37

Contact the shop and ask them

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 02/12/2018 03:38

Yes, if it is sealed it will keep until Xmas...and beyond.

Zulor - but what if it's thawed already? Freezing twice is bad, no?

OP posts:
Orchardgreen · 02/12/2018 03:44

Cook it, then slice it and freeze slices

Whisky2014 · 02/12/2018 03:45

If its vacuum packed i imagine it will keep very well until xmas.

Flamingoose · 02/12/2018 03:45

But it's already cooked.

OP posts:
Orchardgreen · 02/12/2018 03:54

I wouldn’t keep it til Christmas if it’s already cooked.

Whisky2014 · 02/12/2018 03:54

Its fine. No need to cook or freeze just leave it in fridge until xmas

Orchardgreen · 02/12/2018 04:01

But it barely fits In Goosey’s fridge!
I can’t believe I’m awake and discussing hams.

Flamingoose · 02/12/2018 04:06

I can't believe he chose the ham over the vouchers!

Whisky2014 · 02/12/2018 04:19

Midnight snack tonight?!

Orchardgreen · 02/12/2018 04:23

Now I’m hungry!

Orchardgreen · 02/12/2018 04:24

Best ever ham sandwich.....ham, cream cheese, mustard and tomato.

AjasLipstick · 02/12/2018 04:27

I'd cut it in half and chow down now....then freeze the other half. It will be fine

MaitlandGirl · 02/12/2018 04:42

It’ll be vacuum sealed so will easily keep till new year (and beyond) as it’s cured like bacon.

You can refrigerate it whole till Christmas or slice it and then freeze it.

If you keep it whole you’ll need to store it in a cotton ‘ham bag’ or pillowcase once the packaging has been opened. (Soak the ham bag/pillowcase in a bowl full of cold water with a good glug of white (or malt) vinegar. Wring it out until just damp and put the ham in it. Resoak the ham bag/pillowacase every 3rd day or earlier if it dries out).

If you want to glaze the ham and serve it hot there are loads of recipes online.

Flamingoose · 02/12/2018 04:49

Good lord, a ham bag? Really?

I'm not inclined to open it early. We're really not big meat eaters. I'll save it for Christmas and hope our visitors enjoy it.

Are you in NZ?

All hams here come cooked and you could buy one one and it would be vacuum sealed and last till Xmas. On Xmas we'd open it and cook it again with a glaze on it, warm ham mmmm.
And this is from the NZ pork website:

How to store leg ham (bone in)
To stop your leg ham from drying out, keep it in a ham-bag or wrap it in a damp tea-towel in the fridge.
Before using the bag, soak in a mix of 1 litre of water to 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Squeeze out the excess liquid to leave the bag damp. For the best results, repeat the process every few days.
Remember to wrap your ham loosely to allow for air circulation, and place it in the coolest part of the fridge soon after serving.

Does it look like this? Serve it with cheese ❤️

Never heard of anyone buying/winning a cooked ham. So, I'll bow out now and take my ignorance of such matters with me! Grin
I presumed it was a raw ham. Most people cook turkey and ham for Christmas where I'm from, so I presumed it was a raw ham.
Does it have instructions on it, such as 'suitable for home freezing'?
I wouldn't like to leave anything a month in a fridge, cooked/uncooked, but maybe 'tis a different beast to what I'm accustomed to.

hagsrus0 · 02/12/2018 06:22

Bah! Hambag!

Bunnymumma · 02/12/2018 06:29

@hagsrus0 I also nearly choked laughing at ham bag!

MaitlandGirl · 02/12/2018 06:34

Not seeing what’s so funny about a ‘ham bag’. It’s a calico drawstring bag that you store your ham in, what else would it be called???

Cooked hams are a massive part of Australian Christmas dinner and every supermarket sells them and the bags

AjasLipstick · 02/12/2018 06:46

Maitland They're a great innovation for sure. I never met a hambag till I got to Oz either though.
