Anyone have any experience with open fire/back boilers?

we Live in an old 4 bedroom sandstone farming cottage which is oil central heating, when we first moved in the boiler was very inefficient and ate through oil in no time and the rooms never really felt warm. The landlord got a new boiler installed and the difference is amazing, warmer house and less oil used. Loft is insulated and the windows are double glazed

Regardless of this oil is ridiculously expensive just now and has been most of the summer, we have an open fire and I have been wondering whether a back boiler to supplement the oil heating in heating the radiators would work?

I just wanted to find out a little more before I present my case to the landlord to see if they would be willing to think about it?

When we moved into this house in February we only had a coal fired boiler with an open fire. It was not a good experience - once you’d lit the fire it took about three hours for there to be enough powrr to heat the radiators to Luke warm. We got a gas boiler in May and have been enjoying being able to have instant heat.

In our old house it took hours to heat up and even then the rest of the house it room the chill off the air if that it didn’t do really warm the house very much. It might not be so bad because you do have the pile heating and it would only be to supplement it but it’s not great.
Sil currently has that as her only method of heating and it is a total pain keeping the fire going enough for it to be any use the o key room in her house that is comfortable and consistently warm is the room with the fire in it.

Ok maybe just stick to the oil heating then! We have the fire on quite a lot at the moment and the living room is lovely and toasty so much so I have to move the thermostat so the heating comes on for the rest of the house!

Do kind of wish it was a log burner though or a park ray like our last house the house was always red hot!
